I have an ordinary "walk behind" self propelled gas powered lawn mower (Partner 431 PD), equipped with a collecting-type of blade that throws out the cut grass behind the mower or into a collector normally. Question: is it possible to replace the blade with a mulching-type of blade if I can find a blade that would fit physically? Will it work like a mulching mower if I just plug the grass eject opening? It would be much more convenient for me with a mulching type of operation for most situations, i.e unless the grass is too long and too wet. The mower is powered by a 3.5 hp Tecumseh engine in excellent working order. Thanks for all information and experience you can share! A blade change is long overdue and I'd like to have a perfect blade for my intended use.
True Mulching mowers have a specific deck design to them, but I would say yes to your question. It's been quite a few years, but I have done this little conversion myself - replace regular blade with a mulching blade. Just make sure the mulch blade does fit your mower. Also, use something substantial in terms of strength to close the discharge opening. There can be a good deal of force placed at the opening from flying debris. You'll also want to make the cover removable, so you can mow damp grass without the cover.
