Printer was working fine today, then I ran out of ink. I replaced both black and colour cartriges with the new (correct) cartriges. Now I get a "Black Cartrige Missing" error message. Did all the obvious things (taking out and replacing the cartrige several times, turning the printer off, trying a different new cartrige, ensuring the metal prongs inside the carriage are not bent, etc). I don't get this error message with the old cartrige (except that I can't print anything because it's out of ink), but I get it with any new cartrige I stick in.
Did you use a brandname ink cartridge - or is it a knock-off brand? If it is a brand name - then the cartridge is most likely defective. If it is a knock-off brand - some printers do not recognize the electronic in the cartridge and therefore don't see it as one being installed.

remove the cartridges and reinstall them back, turn the printer off , if that does not work, did you use a new original cartridge or a recycled cartridge ?, either way will trick the printer into the new cartridges, i, hope this solves the problem good luck.

Assuming you have used a Dell approved ink cartridge the problem is most likely just a dirty print head. If you haven't printed for a while (which can be only a week or so in hot places) you may have to run the cleaning process 5-10 times or more before you start to see marks on the paper. This is typical of all ink jets that are not used regularly. If you can not get it to print or it will not get good enough to print you can resort to manually cleaning the print head with a qtip dipped in viniger which disolves most inkjet inks. It won't take very much to clean and it will print like new.
