Am borrowing friend's machine and can not seem to make it sew. the teeth which should move the fabric move very litttle, so the threads get tangled. what are the correct settings?
You may need to service the machine. One thing to check is the feed teeth are at least 1mm above the needle plate on the highest setting. You can remove the needle plate and check if there is lint keeping the teeth from rising. The upper right knob controls the stitch length set it at 3 for normal sewing. 6 would be a longer stitch.

Sergers are not really meant to sew very thick material. The blades have a maximum amount of range, or thickness that they can reach to cut. If you go outside that range, get ready for a big repair bill! You can break loopers and even the needle plate when you "push" a serger. My advise would be to use you sewing machine for the, "pounding" work. The type of material matters too, A thick Quilt like fabric can be sewn becatuse it's not dense material. A thinner harder denim could max out at 3 layers because of it"s hard finish. If the fabric you're sewing isn't dense like, you could just need new knives.

The feed dogs are not working in conjunction with needle because of the bulk. The bulkiness especially at the seams causes a shift under the pressure foot and the bobbin spins off excessive thread. When you get to the seam, you need to raise the presser foot so it goes over the seam evenly. Get a jeanajig or use something that will level off the presser foot as it goes over and as it comes off the seam. Also trim some of the bulk off before you fold the hem over to sew it.

change the needle--make sure it's the right needle for the fabric
being sewed
rethread the machine top using every thread guide
check to make sure the bobbin is not over wound, make sure the
bobbin is not warped, & that the bobbin is inserted correctly into the
machine
make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
it's also possible that the machine is out of time
