Telescope has not been used for a very long time (new batteries). It only responds intermittently to the direction keys on the hand control (version 101.0). The alignment, when it responded to hand control) would slew to maximum but not lock onto any star. The telescope would then not respond to undo key (appears to lock up).

I also have an 8i, but decided not to upgrade the controls yet. I've had my scope for about four years. I have experienced the same problem and am not sure what what causes it. Some nights, the scope tracks alignment all night, other times it does not. When the later occurs, the only thing that helps is to repeat the alignment picking new targets. One night, I had to repeat alignment 3-4 times. Also, I highly recommend a book by Michael Swanson, "The Nexstar User's Guide". It's an easy read, very specific and keeps the novice in mind. It should be included with every Nexstar sold. Go online to: http://www.Nexstarsite.com. Hope this helps. John

Do you have a fresh set of batteries in the scope? Better to use an outside 12 volt power pack with the Celestron 12 volt "cigarette" lighter cable.
This can be three things:
Low power
Bad cable from hand controller to scope.
Or a broken hand controller
Try fresh batteries first.

You should return the scope under warranty-- however a bad power supply-- and or a bad hand controller cable can cause these symptoms called a "runaway slew".
Get a separate 12 volt power supply and the proper cigarette lighter style power plug.
