I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.

I see you left a 'Thanks for Trying' response to my solution. That was not the problem? You checked the seat switch and it was working?

my seat connection seems to be fine at the seat. but this is excactly what happening to my mower as well, could it be a fuse? is there fuses? lol i borrowed this mower and want to give it back in working order.

Where is the manual bypass valve lever located on the craftsman 247.288852 lawn tractor? It has a MTD 918-04566 fluid drive transmission. l can not seem to find it anywhere

The manual bypass valve lever on a Craftsman 247.288852 lawn tractor with an MTD 918-04566 fluid drive transmission is typically located on the rear of the transmission, near the pulley. You may need to remove the rear cover to access it. Look for a small lever or knob that can be turned or pulled to disengage the transmission and allow you to move the tractor manually. If you're having trouble locating the manual bypass valve lever, you may want to consult your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician for assistance. They should be able to provide you with more specific information and guidance on how to locate and operate the manual bypass valve lever.

Tractor starts then dies when brake is released

It is most likely one of the safety switches on the tractor like the one under the seat or the one on the clutch/brake.

Idles fine, shuts down when release brake.

It could be the brake switch bad, if this model came with one. When it is depressed it will start, but when it is released it may not be switching to stay running.

Craftsman garden tractor quits when brake released.

It sounds like your throttle cable is caught up with the brake pedal.
