Sony SLV N55 model VCR has been having problems starting up and ejecting tapes for a while. I stopped turning it off and just let it stay on but tapes couldn't be used inside of it. Today I put in a tape after moving VCR from room to room and it won't turn on again and the tape won't come out. It just jerks and clicks for like 30 minutes and still won't turn on. Whenever it stops jerking and clicking, I try to power on and it starts that stuff again. VCR seems done, but I need it for it's tuner. What do you think?

Is it ejecting the tape when you set up for timed record, or any record mode for that matter? If so, check for the presence of the record lockout tab in the tape. If tab is there, machine should accept it. If machine ejects tape with the tab present, then the sensor which detects tab present or absent is probably afoul. this sensor is often a small switch. This tab, by the way, is on the backside of the tape, on the left, looking at the tape from the back.

you posted 2 different problems here...
to answer this one ". The tape is stuck, won't eject and I'd like to get it out without damaging the VCR unit."...open unit, find motor that moves tape ejector and spin that motor by hand (power off)
the other problem, "the VCR will not insert a tape. It keeps rejecting it."...open unit and fully turn ejection motor until home position is reached...this is a home sensor switch not being activated.

While the tape may appear to be loading properly, it is not. These units have a known problem with the grease at the loading arm getting sticky. This means that the tape is not loaded properly and will not move through the VCR properly. This is detected as the hubs not moving and the unit will eject the tape to prevent damage. This is a simple repair for anyone that has done these before, but requires an alignment check. This check requires a special alignment tape and equipment.
This should be a labor only repair.

There schould be a release buuton on the rear of the machine. It's usually recessed and may be difficult to see. Press this with the yip if a ballpoint pen and extract the tape. If the tape is wrapped around the record/playback heads your only option is to remove the top cover and manually remove the tape. Sounds difficult but if you take your time it's not too bad a job.
Testimonial: "Thank you! - no button - took the top off. I depressed a lever next to the tape switched the VCR back on and pressed the eject button - it worked!"
