After inserting the battery, my curve 8520 red light lights for a short while then the phone goes to a white screen with a small black clock-like face in the middle. Nothing further happens. Help will be greatly appreciated.
Good chance the unit is either broken and not allowing the Operating System (OS) to run. Next step would be to download/install Blackberry Desktop Manager (for this version of Blackberry) from the Blackberry website. Connect the Blackberry to the PC running Desktop Manager and see if the Desktop Manager can connect to the Blackberry. If yes, you could try to update the OS.
Sadly the Desktop manager is for Windows and I run Linux. Thanks for your input - you're probably right!

Remove suspicious apps one by one. If the problem remains after removing all apps restore the firmware to factory using the desktop manager. If the problem still remains there may be a hardware issue. If you're out of warranty there are Blackberry Repair Guides if you want to attempt a DIY repair, logic boards are on ebay.

The battery is drain.
DO NOT use the USB cable to charge your Blackberry.
When the PC/Laptop/Mac go to power saving/SLEEP mode it will cut off the charge to the Blackberry.
Use the official AC charger to charge the Blackberry.
Make sure the AC power is not switch off to the power pack at night.

The mini USB connector can be loosen over time.
Plug in the cable and check for connectivity.
