Case 580E backhoe. Stopped running right in the middle of working. No sputter, nonthing. I thought I head a small pop when it quit, but no one else did. Now it will start when we use starting fluid, but dies as soon as the starter fluid is gone. The starter, battery, etc. is working fine.

Could you be more specific in the syndrome?

Replace it . I have found to repair it costs more than a replacement.

Your either getting air in the system or the injection pump or lift pump is going out.Put a clear piece of hose at the injection pump where the fuel fed is at,then try to start and see if there are air bubbles in the line. If not,then possibly an injection pump.

Find out why getting that hot. Clean the fins on head and around engine.

I was having the same problem, it would fire right up, I could even get it to run for a while if I left it in the half-choke position, but it would always shut down eventually, within 20 seconds or so.
I even rebuilt the Carburetor with no improvement. I was thought it was the idle setting and I was looking for the same thing as the original post here when I saw the first answer, "... put new gas cap on and problem solved..could not get air in...", a light bulb went off in my head!
That was the problem! In fact, you don't have to purchase a new gas cap. Just use a small flat head screw driver to pop the center, yellow piece out of the middle of the cap. Underneath that there's a small foam filter much like the material used in the breather filter. I washed it out with soap and water, put it all back together and it runs fantastic now!

I think that your right. Sounds like your ignition coil witch is most likely located under the the flywheel cover. I know that on some briggs and stratton engines they are actually under the flywheel, just trace the sparkplug wires to know for sure. When the ignition coil beginns to fail they start slowly (spitting and sputtering) and then they get to the point to where they stop firing after getting heated up and adventually quit all together.
