Ok, let me start this off with I know very little about lawnmowers or anything mechanical, I am a computer guy stepping way out of my comfort zone....... so with that said.
Yesterday I was cutting grass and I noticed it was getting hard to push a self propelled mower... that didnt sound right and it didnt feel right. When i turned it off i noticed some smoke or steam coming from the backside of it. I finally figured out that the belt wasnt turning the wheels. I worked on it for an hour or two and took the belt guard, on the bottom of the mower, off and after I manually moved the belt around it started to self propel again.... I thought my problem was solved.....
When i pull the mower backwards, while it is on, it is still REALLY tough, like something is caught in the wheel. I took the back wheels of this morning and noticed they were dirty. I also took the bottom side of the tranny off just to look to see if I noticed anything obvious, i only saw alot of grease. I dont know where to really go from here besides cleaning everything off of the wheels and regreasing them, but I dont know even know how to start doing that.
Where do I go from here?
Oh and this unit has only been used about 5 times to cut my grass so I am a little upset this has happened already. Thanks.
Clean out the old grease, yeah u can use brake parts cleaner, make sure u pack it with new, most self porpelled mowers are difficult to move backwards as theyre not made for that....as u stated the belt slipping? check the belt again make sure it isnt to wore out, and also check the cable that goes to the self propelled gear box, make sure it working properly, make sure the spring isnt rusty, u can try and shoot some wd40 into the cable and into the spring and that may loosen it up a bit....
Cleaning the inside of the wheels is a good idea. Something could just be lodged. As may pertain to this mower, most have a spring loaded cog which releases to free-roll. Good luck. Let me know if this doesn't help.
