I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your mixer. To stop the oil leaking from the front of the mixer, you just need to remove the drip ring and give it a good clean underneath and this should stop the oil from leaking out. Below I have added a link and if you watch on the timing "1.28" you will see how to remove the drip ring.

Remove the chrome drip ring that covers the outer planetary, clean it out, wipe as much oil away as possible, put the drip ring back on and carry on using it. Eventually you will need to completely dismantle the gearbox and clean out & change the grease. It's not the sort of job to look forward to. The old grease slowly breaks down over time and the oil is separating out from the grease solids. It is special food grade grease so completely harmless.

It's not oil, it's grease. Here is a very detailed article on how to add grease to the mixer. After you have added some new grease and tightened the screws it will stop leaking. The temporary fix is to simply remove the chrome ring as is done in the picture on the attached link, clean out the oil and stick it back on till it fills up again. It is called a drip ring for the reason that it catches the oil component of the grease which drips from the gasket when the screws loosen:

Kitchenaid says to run the machine on 'high' long enough to heat the gearbox well and then turn the machine upside down and let it cool.

What happens is when you don't use your mixer a lot the grease in the gearbox will separate into oil and thicker grease. Warming it and turning it upside down is supposed to mix all the grease together again and allow it to flow to the top of the gearbox.

These mixers are filled with grease at the manufacturer, and the heat may have broken down the grease a bit and looking like oil. Without seeing the problem, or knowing the exact location of the leak, I would say that a gasket or "O" ring has failed. Contact Kitchenaid for a gasket/seal rebuild kit. If it is new(er), It may be covered under warranty.

You can see that there are 5 screws holding the upper and lower gearcase together. They pinch the gasket number 26 together and prevent the oil and grease from leaking. Remove the chrome ring by prying gently around the ring. You will see the 5 screw heads. Tighten them and the leaking will stop.

If it still leaks then you may have to replace the fiber washers number 29 which will involve disassembling the lower gear case.

It sounds like you have lost some teeth from your worm gear. This usually happens when the mixer has been overloaded. The teeth on the worm gear are designed to fail first to prevent more serious damage. To replace the part you will need to open the head on your mixer. The gears are at the front of the mixer packed in grease. It should be obvious that the worm gear has broken once the head is open. If it is not the worm gear, with the head open it should be easy to spot the problem. The gears are available as spare parts from several places on the internet. search for "kitchenaid worm gear".

When you replace the worm gear, you should be able to see if you need more grease. This will have been the "oil" you saw escaping.

The mixer normally has it's gearbox packed with (quite thick) grease. Over time it can heat up and become more fluid and leak out. I would guess that the amount of oil you saw would not be a problem to loose. If it were mine, I would use it and not worry. If you do feel you need to check, the grease is packed in the front of the head. You will need to remove the head, split it (you will need to remove the band and planetary) and then you can see the gears.

Hi Tim. Don't try to pour anything into the side openings, these openings are for the electrical brushes. You didn't state what model you have so my help is limited. Goto www.kitchenaid.com and click on the customer care tab. Enter your mixer's model# into the search window. Look for a parts catalog for your mixer. If there is one, download it.

Your mixer uses grease to lubricate it. If it's leaking oil, the oil and old grease must be removed and replaced. Chevron FM ALC EP-2 is a "Food Grade" grease, use it to replace the old stuff. The transmission housing and Planetary assembly will have to be removed to accomplish this. It's a messy, but necessary task. Once completed, run the mixer for a few minutes each week to keep the oil suspended in the grease, this will extend the life of the new lube. Good luck!
