Homelite 240 chainsaw spiting gas?

This saw has not been used for a while. Was stored empty. It has new gas (40:1) and oil. Air filter looks clean. Spark plug dried off. It starts for about 5 seconds and then dies. It is spitting the gas mix out the right side by some black cover - same area where spark plug is physically located. What else do I need to check?

Spitting gas is not good. It's probably leaking there instead of going into the carburetor where it can fire the engine. Need to find that leak and change the hose it's running out of. You get gas to the carburetor by gravity and vacumn from the engine. With a broken hose you loose all gravity effects and vacumn that would pull the gas to the carburetor.

Homelites from the beginning of time have spilled mixed gas down over the cylinder head by the spark plug from the gas cap. Then you go out and cut massive amounts of wood and all the sawdust swirls around the head, sticks to the oily gas residue and sooner or later it builds up in the cooling fins surrounding the cylinder head. This causes the chainsaw to run hotter because it can't cool efficiently and the gas tank is right there close to the head and cylinder so it absorbs a lot of extra heat, so much so that i've seen the gas inside the tank literally boiling hot which forces it out of the gas cap vent and spills more oily gas mixture over the head to accummulate more sawdust and cause more overheating. Care should be taken not to overfill the gas tank. Keep the saw and cylinder head clean of buildup so it can run cooler and change gas tank caps often so that you have a clean vent incase you do build up pressure.

What oil to gas ratio

Most newer chainsaws and small 2 stroke gas gardening tools use a 50:1 older chain saws use 40:1. If you don't know just use 40:1 your saw will only smoke a bite. Use hi test gas and good quality oil

Where can I get a replacement air filter for a Homelite 240 chain saw? No place/site seems to have them.

Jacks Small Engines claims to stock them and he does an on line business. If you are still not able to obtain an air filter, I have made air filters using Scotch Brite of the correct thickness. It allows sufficient air through and the oil spray back through the carb assists in dust trapping. Good luck and please rate this response.

Correct mix of gas and oil for Chain Saw

The ratio is 40:1, provided this is a gasoline homelite chainsaw. Find the suitable amount to put into the gas can at a ratio of 3.2 oz per gallon. The bottles that you buy the oil in have marks on them telling you how much there is, and often times, are sized to dump into a preset amount of gas. Put the oil in the can, then put the gas in the can, cap, and shake. Always shake before dispensing.

Gas oil mixture

The header says that it is an electric saw which would only require bar oil. A 2-stroke gas engine, however, does require fuel mixed with a modern saw oil at 40:1 ratio plus bar/chain oil in it's own tank as well. Always premix the fuel and oil in a separate can and shake well even before filling the saw. Hope this helps!

I have a 3300 homelite chainsaw 16'bar,what is the oil,gas ratio?

This should run well with 40:1 ratio using modern synthetic saw oils only. Always premix the fuel and oil in a can before adding to the saw, then agitate the saw to mix the old with the new. Hope this helps!

I have a 240 Homelite chainsaw and need to know what mixture to make the gas 50:1 40:1 what?

Fuel/Oil Mixture
  1. Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the OIL supplier's recommended ratio. Today I use Stihl 2 cycle oil mixed @ 50:1 in a Pioneer that I purchased new in 1980. There are no gouges or scratches on the piston or cylinder and I have no carbon build up on the piston top. The manual (on stone tablets) recommends 24:1. Over the years the mixture has leaned from 24:1 (Saw Recommendation) to 28:1 (Lawn boy mower recommendation) to 32:1 (Oil provider 8oz/2gal - used for many years) and finally the last 5 (±) years 50:1 (Stihl 2.6oz/1gal)
  2. Any fuel containing ethanol is not good with chainsaws. Mix what you expect to use within a few months. Anything over 3 months old use up in a 4 cycle engine. HTH

Have no 2cycle oil, can you use something other than that for a homelite chainsaw?

I would not use any other type of oil in the saw. 2 cycle oil is blended to desolve in gas and still protect your saws engine. You can get it every where for alot less than a new saw. Good Luck

The percentage of oil and gasoline nedeed

Most saws and other 2 cycle engines use 40:1 ratio gas:oil.

I would not expect yours to be different, unless it is an older saw made before 1980.
