I had this problem before on my LG TV. My solution is to put a 12V fan on the tuner board processor. The problem is caused by the TV overheating and when the tuner CPU overheats it sends a high temperature OFF command that instructs the power board to shut the tuner board off (although the rest of the TV stays on). This is why it sounds like a click when it happens. You cannot likely get a TV repair man to fix this because the LG TV's do not have adequate heat control other than vent holes on the bottom and top. This is a design flaw that started a class-action lawsuit against LG.

This is almost certainly the device that sends electricity to the the plasma in the panel after failing. Bring to your local repair shop and expect to pay 300-400 parts and 100-200 labour.

Cheers,
Stephen

Check high voltage circuit. This is near where the 120 volt cord is plugged in and a high voltage transformer, where there should be capacitor (or two). Check the voltage - should be 390 to 400 volts. If not less than 390, near to replace the capacitor.

42 inch LG Plasma TV Lost Picture

Hi it sounds like it has had an elctric fault like a resistor failing.
The click you heard would be a internal switch that cuts off the elctric supply to the screen to stop furthe damage hapening.
It could even be something simple like a bad solder and in that case will need locating and resoldering.
How old is the telly and how often is it used.
When you switch it off leave it off for about an hour then try again if you have allready done this then it probably is a blown resistor are you sure nothing has been pressed on controll have you tried seeing if you can acess the menu screen via the remote and see if that comes up on the screen let me know ok

Check the power board for any domed capacitors. Replace them. If this does not fix Replace the power board. You can check the voltages from the power board. they are labeled. VS and VA voltages are the panel voltages.

Sounds like a capacitor blew on one of the boards. Can you detect any burnt electronic smell? If the Cap blew on the Power Supply, you can either replace the Capacitor or replace the power supply board. The boards are between $79 and $149 depending where you get it. Some of the other boards, Y or Z Sus, are between $179 and $300. If you can't do it yourself, and with many 42" models selling for $649 to $899, it might be too expensive to fix.

You can find the boards on ebay or shopjimmy, youtube has videos showing how to replace them. Hope that helps.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Hi , I recently had the same problem which I was determined to fix . So I did a few weeks of research to find that it was the Y SUS board which burns out. I'm sure you realized that the TV gets hot. Personally I think this is why. circuit boards don't like heat and I've learned that the cooling fans are a joke. I replaced the board and got my picture back. I proved the fan theory because after the screen started to act up. I placed a cooling fan near the vent holes on top and the problem cleared right up,It also helps if you lower the brightness which helps out on the heat situation.I will soon be adding a fan with a temp. sensor. This shoud help if your screen has lines when you initially turn the cool TV on.then I have Some other costless solutions. Hope this helped these are great TV's and like our cars we maintain them not throw them away..................................Mr Wiseman

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.
