I have a yard machines mtd 18hp 46" cut riding lawn mower with automatic transmission. When I shift into gear it makes a noise and will not move. What could be the problem? Is there a way to check transmission fluid?
The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides
No the hydrostatic trani's are sealed, if it fails then get a new one. But before that take a look underneath, inspect the lever linkage and the belt first. Good luck.

My will go into gear, but there is very little power. The rear axel always made a whiny noise. Now it slows down to stop. I have the engine reved up and have it in 6sp high. I also smell burnt rubber. Maybe a belt? I don't know where to start.
I have a 12.5 hp yard machine that will not go into gear. what could be the problem?
