GX 390 starts, runs for about 15 seconds and shuts down. Gas and Oil is OK.

This appears to be relating to an Ingersol Rand Air Compressor rather than anything in the Honda Garden category? Make Model (What is is) in all questions please.

According to my research is has a 20HP 3-PHASE ELECTRIC MOTOR. There are some other tihings to consider. When you are running this Honda gas engine, you are filling your workshop with deadly carbon monoxide gas.

Your Honda GX-390 is only 11.7 hp (8.7 kW) @ 3,600 rpm, not 20hp so it is doomed to failure. Also, how are you going to get it to cycle on when the tank needs it.

Take your existing electric motor and get it repaired or rewound. Much cheaper option for a safe working environment and doing the job it is meant to.

Most likely oil sending unit or fuel vacuum lock. Easy to check. Run with gas cap loose to allow air into tank. if it still shuts down, temporarily disconnect oil sensor. If the oil sensor is giving false reading and shutting down the engine, just leave disconnected, however, be diligent about checking oil level. Good luck.

It will run for a few minutes and then shut down?
Lets ignore the growl for now. Loosen Gas cap and see if it will keep running. The rattle might be in the pull cord mechanism..possibly not related to stalling issue

check for correct oil level in sump as indicates low oil sensor is shutting it down
check replace low oil sensor unit

Make sure the engine is not full of paint or dust debris in it's cooling system. If the fuel mixture setting is very lean, it can cause overheating. Make sure the fuel tank vent is open to prevent fuel starvation. Does the engine seem to be running at full operational speed? If not, it will be short on developed horsepower. Make sure the water source is not partially shut off. Hope some of this helps!

Can your gas tank breathe? Is your fuel filter clogged? Might there be something in the tank that would obstruct the flow of fuel?

Check the tank by loosening the top to allow air to enter.

Sometimes you have to lower the air pressure in the tank to allow it to run. The back pressure from the compressed air in the compressor head overcomes the pressure created in the engine at the slow RPMs you are able to pull while attempting to crank it.

IS IT BUILDING TO THE UNLOAD PRESSURE AND THEN STALLING OR JUST SHUTTING DOWN ANYTIME. IS THE UNIT SITTING AT AN ANGLE?
