Freezer wall ices up, fridge not staying cool

Hi, i have a bottom mount kenmore 72912. the back of the freezer wall is icing over and when this happens, my refrigerator gets warm. I have used a blow dryer to get rid of some of the ice, it seems to help for a while, then the ice comes right back. I just unplugged it for 2 days and don't know where to go from here. all the fans seem to be working properly...help!

It's both...snow on the back wall, ice at the bottom by the "vents". Sorry I don't know the correct term. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I did plug the unit back in this morning (9 months pregnant and ready to shoot someone everytime they need something from fridge downstairs!) I turned the freezer way down to 2 and the problem is not obvious at this point.

bottom freezer ices up, thus causing temperature to become too warm. Cleaned thoroughly and it was o.k. for a couple of weeks, then the same problem reoccurred.

My freezer is freezing up too much while the fridge wont stay cool.

I have the freezer temp control all the way down and the fridge all the way up. Still no satisfaction.

Is it ice in the freezer or frost? snow like.. big difference in problems

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2007

IF back wall of freezer is frosted.. that indicates a defrost problem... defrost heater bad, or defrost themostate is most common proplems... u would need a ohm meter to ohm out those parts.. temp. fix would be take of back panel and defrost with blow dryer.. would give u 3 or 4 days of trouble free cooling.. then would frost back up and tell fixed.

The freezer is working fine but the fridge is not cooling. The motor is running constantly. I did accidently leave the fridge door ajar for a few hours

Check to see if the cold air supply from the freezer to the fridge section is blocked and that the fan is running. The fridge uses cold air from the freezer to cool and many times the intake is blocked by something in the freezer compartment.

Freezer stops freezing food - frig stays cool

Possibly sounds like the heating element on your defroster is burnt out or the drain hole for the defroster is blocked, not allowing the defrosted water to drip underneath the fridge to evaporate, thus causing a buildup of ice. That buildup may be blocking that vent that goes bwtn the freezer and fridge. The heating element is simply checked and/or replaced by removing back panel of freezer. It's about the only thing behind that panel and likes like a row of fins. Google images for a better understanding of what you are looking at. If its a block of ice, you know there is a problem. The element is replaced by simply unplugging it and replacing with a new one. You should also see a small hole at the bottom of the freezer. Try pouring a little water in it and listen to see it its running into the plastic pan that's underneath the fridge (usually visible if you take the grill off). Some models have a hose that kinks up attached to this small hole. Had an Amana freezer that did this on several occasions and cause the whole bottom of the freezer to become a block of ice because the water had no where to go.

Kenmore fridge and freezer not cooling

Check to see if there is any ice built up on the back wall of the freezer. If so thaw the ice and take the back wall out of the freezer. next check to see if the fan is running in the freezer (evaporator fan) This fan is what circulates the air from the freezer to the fridge. If it does run then you have a defrost problem (if ice is on the coils and back wall). Then replace defrost timer, heater, and thermostat.

Ice maker not making ice

a few things, was the ice maker working before repair?? generally the ice maker need to "cool" before making ice, usually give 24 hrs to start producing ice. next perhaps the tech shut off water supply never turned back on??? bottom freezer, perhaps he had to remove the ice maker to remove the back wall of freezer and never reconnected wire harness to the back wall.
