Please move closer to the unit and test the remote again. If the remote works, then you would probably need to change the battery as the current set (within the remote) seems to be running out of power. If the new batteries do not work, then you might need to get a new remote from the manufacturer as the current remote might have become broken.
Most probably the remote PCB has cracked, or a component in it broken (removed from its pad), or it could be that it is bent and making short, or even broken a track on the PCB, hence no infrared signal coming out of it. Take a little lens and go through it, then get someone to solder it for you.
To the two people with problems. This sounds a bit odd, but do you still have the broken remotes? I'm looking for a broken one. I'd pay shipping and throw a few bucks your way if you could send it to me.

If it is a direct tv remote they will replace it for a minimal charge. If it is a remote from the tv, the manafacturer will replace it within a year and if you bought an extended warrantyfrom a store most will replace it free of charge. Except circuit city. They wont help you not one bit
First you need to get your remote working, without it you cannot unlock
the tv. If the romote is not phisically broken (or smashed) make
sure the battery contacts are clean and install new batteries.
Once you get the remote working (hopefully) Enter the MENU and select
'Features'. Set the Child Lock to OFF. If you cannot get the remote to
work try a universal remote, setting it up with the codes for your tv
provided in the setup manual for the universal remote.
