SOURCE: Toro 22in Lawn mower. Loud gear noise when try to engage drive.

Problem is in the rear pinion gears on rear axle and the design of the axle itself. I have a 2005 model 20041 had the same problem. I found a Toro dealer that had the fix.The problem is creadted by the fact that there is too much "play" in the rear axle. You have to limit that play by installing shims, or washers First, but the 2 new rear pinion gears for the rear axle. While you're at it, you may as well buy 2 new rear wheels because the "grinding" has worn the sprockets on the reas r wheels.Next, get 2 "fender washers", 1/2" ID and about 1" OD. I found it easier to turn the mower over and set it on saw horses to work on it.( drain the gas and oil first). Remove both rear wheels, pinion gears and all the washers etc. (caution - keep all parts from one side together - do not pile all parts together - keep them seperated by wheel - the reason is I believe there is one more washer/shim on the right side than on the left). Now to put everything back together, find a spot on the axle where the washer will fit in between the standard stuff.Install new pinion gears and replace the rest of the washers/shims just as they came off. INstall new wheels and you'll be good as new!

SOURCE: Toro model 20038 self propel problem

Try taking the back wheels off and lubricating the joint cogs and wheels with ,say, 3 in 1 oil . The dealer recommended doing this once every couple of years as preventative maintenance when I bought mine , and it has solved sticking problems for me .

SOURCE: front drive wheels won't engage

Is it possible that the belt has either broken or come off the pulleys? Next step would be to remove the cover and see if there is something preventing engagement or if you see any broken parts. May even be as simple as lubricating the cable/levers.

Why won't my front wheels turn after changing the transmission and belt on my Toro model 20012 lawnmower?

Thjere are 4 possibilities:

One, the wheels have plastic hubs with gearing on the inside shell, they may be stripped and not engaging.

Two the transmission is shot; you can check this by removing the belt from the blade pulley and engage the drive control handle; then manually turn the pulley on the transmission by hand, if the wheels engage the tranny is ok.

If the wheels and the tranny are ok then it could be the cable or belt.

We have Toro Lwa 100 Lawn Mower Model #26623. Power engaged, start mowing but lawn mower will not cut grass. You have to stop and let it rev up again to cut more grass.

This 1991-92 model is equipped with a blade brake clutch. When the blade slows down this means the belt is slipping. This slipping can be caused from a few different things.
1 --A loose cable. barterjoe_0.gif
Try adjusting the blade cable on the upper handle. this unit has an adjustable section. make sure the cable is not so tight that you snap it.
2 --A sticky pivot point under the belt cover
The belt cover in the back builds up with dirt and debris. Make sude it is clean under the cover and all of the pivots move freely. ( do this with the engine off)
3 --A sticky belt tensioner under the deck cover
The underside of this machine has a metal cover to protect the belts. Remove it and check that the blade belt idler arm is not frozen in place. this will cause the belt not to enguage all the way.
4 --A worn belt or belt pulley
The large flywheel and pulley can wear. Check this if the belt looks good.
This is all there is to the machine BBC system.
I hope this helps.

Blade won't engage - mower starts and propells itself, but when the yellow arm is pulled and lowered to engage the blade, nothing happens.

The blade is probably belt driven, and the belt is either broken, need adjusting, worn that bad, or there is a pulley problem. Get it in the air and check that the belt tightens. It will not be completely tight, there should be a tiny bit of play when engaged.

Model #20064 wheels do not turn when you squeeze the bar to engage them. The pulley under the plastic guard spins but not the wheels.

Have you observed what happens under that plastic guard when you squeeze the bar? Do you feel any resistance at all when you sqeeze the bar? The reason I am asking is because there are a number of reasons why this is happening. The drive gearcase is actuated by a spring loaded arm that engages the drive gear to the spinning gear attached to the pulley. A good way to test this is to disconnect the spark plug, raise the mower just enough to lift the wheels off the ground, engage the arm and spin the pulley by hand; if the wheels move then it most likely is the drive cable...if the wheels do not move, it is the gearcase. On a rare occasion it could be the belt is old and stretched out, you can test that easily as well...start the lawnmower, raise the wheels by pushing down on the handlebar and engage the drive by squeezing the handle, if the belt is stretched out, the pulley will move intermittently or not at all.

Hope this helps!

Install belt on toro mower model 70041

For removing/replacing the deck belt, the general method is:
  1. turn off engine, remove key and set parking brake
  2. disengage blade by putting blade engage lever into off (disengaged) position
  3. lower the cutting deck to the lowest position (closest to the ground)
  4. relieve the belt tension (depending on the model, use a 3/8 inch ratchet set to tighten in the square hole of the idler bracket)
  5. remove and replace the belt
NOTE: it's not necessary to completely remove the cutting deck.

If the transmission drive belt needs to be replaced, several components must be removed and special tools (i.e. air/impact wrench) used in order to change the tractor's transmission drive belt. See an Authorized Toro Service Dealer to have your drive belt replaced.

Have wheel horse riding lawnmower that will not engage the blades

Take a look underneath, either the belt has stretched too much and its too long now or it has broke or fallen off. It could be that one of the pulleys have become frozen but you should hear squealing or the engine might stall. Good luck.
