This means that the controller itself is broken. Most likely, the joystick is broken on the inside and is only working one way. My controller has done this same thing. The only option that I found was to buy a new controller. Because the controller cannot be fixed at this point. If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. This is a common issue with the PSPs --- the analog joystick assembly wears out and characters start moving by themselves. Replacing the part will fix the issue. The following website sells the part for $15 and installs it for $20 more:
Small Tidbit of info: The PSP 1st gen never came in Piano Black. Piano Black is a shiny glossy black color that started with the 2nd gen PSP. The 1st gen is more of a matte black color.
Friend, i guess the connection of your joystick going upward is broken
or disconnected. the connection terminal needed to be resolder. if
still does'nt work, you need to replace the whole joy stick.good luck
