Change rubber gasket

My Maytag (MAH5500B) gasket has mold..My mom has the same washer and her is broken..her gasket dosn't have any mold so I want to change the gasket. Do you know how to take out the drum and change the gasket? I don't want to take the washer apart more than I have to.

I have mould in the rubber gasket of my neptune front loading washing machine as well,I have just noticed now that there is a tear in it as well,I always leave the door open when not in use so it is able to air out,but this has not helped.I guess we will have to look in to replacing the gasket,we are just hoping it will not cost a lot of money.

Water remains in the gasket section of the washer, Black mold occurs and

can not be scrubbed out. What is the best maintainance procedure?

  • eplevin Feb 10, 2008

I have black gunk all around the rubber gasket in my Maytag Neptune Front Load Stacking Washer. After calling Maytag to ask for suggestions, I purchased AFFRESH , the product developed by Whirlpool (which now owns Maytag) and even after 3 hot water washes with the tablets, the mold remains. Yesterday, I used nearly a container of Clorox wipes and elbow grease to remove the black slime, but there still remains an unhealthy amount on the gasket.

I have looked on-line and this seems to be a rather common problem for this Maytag Washer. Why has Maytag not sent out notices and offered to replace the gaskets?

mold covering the gasket inside the door....how can the mold be removed?????

Our maytag neptune is covered with black mold. How do we clean or replace it? I have tried bleach, dish soap, brushing.... all to no avail.

  • snarkle Sep 06, 2008

Bleach, tilex, etc. etc. Maytag (now Whirlpool) is quite aware of the defect in the design of the gasket & Boot. Why is it that I would have to replace this out of my pocket when they are quite aware of the problem? Certainly if my car had a problem known to many other owners of the same car, the manufacturer would be responsible for at least the cost of the part. What does changing the gasket do anyway? In another couple weeks I'll have the same problem. The design is faulty and Maytag hasn't owned up.

I have the same issue and when I called the company about it, I was told that there was a lawsuit that had been settled several years back. I didn't receive any information about the lawsuit because I hadn't registered my washer. I'm broke and can't afford to buy a new part so I'm searching for a way to remove the gasket so I can soak it in bleach and put it back on. I'm hoping I find it because it's really NASTY.

Remove the door hinges and plastic covers on the unused hinge screw holes on the opposite side of the door opening (door is reversable, so there are places to mount hinges left and right). Front panel will now snap out at top and lift off lower spring clips. One screw on each side will now release top panel and it will hinge up. Prop up with broom handle or something. Now you can get at everthing. Rubber gasket is held onto drum with a cable loop and very strong spring. It rolls off the lip easily to disassemble but is VERY difficult to get back on without special tools or at least two people. We used strong vice grips and much struggling and sweat, and #@*&%!&@ and finally got it on without damage to the new gasket. Door side of rubber gasket is easy in comparison with rubber tabs inserted into slots and working the gasket into a groove. Hose clamp at bottom of rubber gasket to connect drain hose.

The Maytag part number for the new door boot with drain is 12002533.

  • jeff hartman Jul 05, 2008

Regarding the 12002533 door boot... If you have an MAH3000 or an early MAH4000 Neptune then you can add a drain hose kit to allow the water in the lower door boot pocket drain back into the outer tub. See www.neptunewaxmotor.com to order the boot hose kit. The new door boots have a drain that comes blocked with a plug and clamp. You will want to remove the plug and use the included clamp to attach the new hose to the door boot.

You will have to drill out one of the plastic nipples on the outer tub and the new hose will clamp onto this nipple and allow the water to drain. This should reduce the mold build up due to the standing water in the pocket.

Washer front load door boot seal kit with drain, plug and clamp. Gray rubber. Part 12002533 Make WPL QTY $81.50 my gasket was replaced with a "mold free gasket" so i though - now the problem is back again (pull back gasket & look under there - bleach has little or no effect in removing the mold - guess i'll shell out 81.50 for a new gasket. i'll remember this.....when i buy a new machine.

Just did one, takes about 1-2 hours. You have to be slightly smarter than a ****** eatin' moron to do the work. Not too tough!

RUBBER LINER COLLECTING MOLD

I have been struggling with the same issue for a long time. Regular bleach and mold-killing products did not work. But I just tried Clorox "Washing Machine Cleaner" and was amazed. I scraped off the loose mold from the rubber gasket and then painted on the product, which is thicker than bleach. After about 20 min. I scrubbed it down with water and painted a second coat on the tough areas. No more mold. I also ran some through the machine per the instructions for good measure and ran another rinse cycle. I am in no way connected to Clorox, but I am so happy to be rid of this problem. Good luck. <!-- from fixya rte -->

MOLD REMOVAL FROM WASHER RUBBER BOOT

Try this:

Run an empty load and as soon as water has filled and the washer begins to run, open the washer door (probably have to pause the washer via the control panel) and add 3 - 4 cap fulls of regular bleach. If you don't have regular bleach, you can try vinegar. After cycle completes, open washer and wipe the entire gasket with an old towel.

When washer is not in use, prop the door open so the inside can fully dry.

Please report back here with the results and if you are still having problems, we can take the next steps if needed.

RUbber front load washer

Yes unfortunately that rubber gets molded or gets cut . For mold you can try wiping it down with bleach with a rag. If you do it regularly it will slow down the mold. it's annoying but it helps
