their is a reason for this, it is made that way. dyson developed it so when you go from carpet to floor or start with the floor the machine senses this and turns the brushes off. this is done to protect your bare floors from any type of scratches you may get from the brushes good luck

there will be a linkage that as come loose and not operating the limit switch to turn it off, try looking at 23. Idler Clamp Assembly on the link below.

Hi ... did u get this fixed cos mine is the same hve to switch off on the wall?

1) test the belt +brush for worn and replace
2) test the motor

Liz thank you so much for the quick fix. Moving the carpet/floor knob a few times reset the belt. My method of slamming it against the dresser did not produce the desired results.

The belt is worn out and you need to replace it. It's slipping and that's what you smell.

sounds like you have a clog, either in the hose or the inlet by the brush roll.
