I have a Maytag MAV7000AWW purchased in 2000. My understanding of one of the features of this machine is that the agitator reciprocates as driven by the motor (as in any normal design) but also sits on a ratchet-type gear mechanism which somewhat randomly advances the agitator several degrees in a counterclockwise motion (perhaps a less conventional feature) with each reciprocation throughout the wash cycle. This second motion surely improves the efficiency of the machine as it assures that the spiral blade on the agitator mixes clothes from top-to-bottom, in addition to the left-to-right mixing motion that is accomplished through reciprocation.
Under normal operation, the ratchet mechanism spins so freely that if you hold the door open but depress the safety switch to begin the wash cycle, you can advance the agitator along the ratchet by simply gripping the fabric softener dispenser at the maximum counter-clockwise point of reciprocation. I.e. the friction between the fabric softener dispenser and the agitator is sufficient to advance the ratchet mechanism. I do this from time to time to verify the this feature is still working properly and, hence, mixing clothes from top to bottom.
My problem is that it seems that the ratchet mechanism has become stuck or clogged w/ gunk. Recently, when I grip the fabric softener dispenser as indicated above, the fabric softener dispenser spins against the agitator, rather than the agitator advancing along the ratchet. I.e. the friction between the fabric softener dispenser and the agitator is no longer sufficient to advance the agitator alone the ratchet mechanism.
Can anyone recommend what I should do to restore the ratchet mechanism to its proper operation? If my suspicion is correct, can you tell me how to remove the agitator to clean/repair/replace part/all of the ratchet mechanism? And what parts and I likely to need to purchase? Or, of course, tell me if I'm completely off base. Thanks for your advice.
I think I need to know how to remove the fabric softener dispenser and the agitator in order to inspect the ratcheting mechanism to verify that it is working properly. When you grab the fabric dispenser and move the agitator "counter "clockwise you should hear the rachet noise, once you try and move it back "clockwise" the fabric dispenser should slide inside the agitator and the agitator should NOT move.

If you are blowing fuses or tripping the breaker in the color and delicate cycle but not the whites, you have a short in the timer. Here is a link to the replacement part you will need.
pull the agit out and look at the side just below the slots there is a small hole there and the lock screw is probably missing . / to pull agit you turn the screw out and to lock it down you turn it in till it stops . if no lock screw the out comes the agit ... could be very bad in spin if it came out . i have heard of this .. so lock it down .. **** hope this helps .
http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php From what I see, your machine has a drive belt. Check it for damage or see if it has anything on it making it slip. Check the pulleys to make sure they are not worn out.
I would suggest Service Technician is cheaper than doing it yourself Bev007. It will save you headache too. Depending on the severity of the damage, you'll be working on the transmission attaching the shaft of the pulsator or agitator.
Ive never seen a Maytag washer, but I think know the principle. So! I think the motor turns in one direction to wash & the opposite direction to spin. Now, if the transmission is very stiff in the 'wash mode', that could be why its not washing. The motor could be overheating & the thermal trip in the motor cutting off the electricity supply hence having to wait 45 mins for it to cool.
Not too sure! However I think I am on the right track. Let me know please
