If you are in the south part of the US, especially if it is around a pecan tree, would suspect it to be a copperhead. At night they like to climb trees and eat insects that also hang out around trees. They blend in very well and starting at dusk, you might want to avoid the base of trees. A rattlesnake also will climb a tree especially if they just ate a rat or something. Have had them drop down on me while walking under a tree.
Is tree 5-7 years old? Does the soil around the base rock when you push on trunk? If so strangulated roots and not correctable. Old tree? Could be water deficiency, nutrition deficiency, insects, fungus or a bacteria.
