My 4 yr old front load washer is making a banging noise during the spin cycle. I didn't let it get to a fast spin. This was during the slow spin. The drum seems to have more movement than usual.
I have the same problem...the solution is called new washer. I was told it could be overhauled to the tune about $600...barrings are going out. Mine is just 7 years old and that's disappointing.
Sears came out to fix one of mine for $300 plus dollars, but the solution didn't work, so they gave me a $500 voucher for a new machine. The problem is they don't have any new machines that can be paired to stack with my dryer, so I have to get a whole new washer/dryer set, which will cost about $1400. Sears and their service department are a racket.
But to answer your question, I've also fixed this issue by cleaning the drains on the units. For older ones, you have to take off the lower front plate, and have a bowl for the water to drain in. If that doesn't help or work, your SOL my friends.

2 possible issues with your washer.
1 or both the support shocks or springs have broken
the drum would look off center even when empty
or rear bearring has worn out.
this is a very common problem with the fridgidaire washer... (this kenmore is a frigidaire model)
problem is caused by very hard water (well water) or improper use of detergent. this machine uses a High efficency type detergent, marked by "HE" on the detergent container

My Kenmoore 44072 Front load wahing machine has a banging noise when it goes into spin cycle. It is not the load being off center because I even tried it with nothing in it and the problem persisted.
Just bought a new one. This model made by Frigidaire. Piece of ****. Spider is aluminum, connected to stainless steel drum= bad mix, corrosion. New set up, over $200 just to buy if you want to epair yourself. I bought a Whirlpool. Good Luck
You know stainless steal shouldn't be paired with anything but stainless steal. The thunk sound is the bearings going out. I think partly due to the stress of the aluminum reaction with the stainless....who ever thought this was a great idea to do was just after our money....!
I also have the same problem with my Kenmore 44072 front load washer - it starts making a loud banging noise in the spin cycle, especially during a fast spin. Upon opening the front panel, I noticed that a shock absorber was broken (the plastic casing was cracked). I replaced both shock absorbers, but the noise persists. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. If it's the bearings like someone indicated, then it may be time for a new washer. That seems like a shame since otherwise the unit looks in good shape and is only five years old.
Ideas?
We bought ours in January of 2004 and noticed a squeaking noise. Now there's a clunking noise and the drum seems really loose. We are very disappointed. Apparently the repair cost of a front loader is comparable to buying a new one.
