Lid Switch Assembly
If the washer stops mid cycle the lid switch
assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid
switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any
electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches
should have continuity according to their design.

Water Inlet Valve
If the washer stops mid cycle the water inlet
valve cold water side may have failed. Most washers have a cold water
rinse and so if they can't fill with cold water they just sit
indefinitely waiting for the cold water to enter. If there is cold water
to the water inlet valve and the cold water works in other parts of the
cycle - or to make warm water - the valve is not the problem.

turn the power off if the water stops it most likley a pressure switch problem or the pressure tube on the side of the outer tank may have pulled off.if you turn the power off and the water doesnt stop then the valve is faulty (cold)if it was on the rinse.hope this helps.
SOURCE: washing machine wont quit filling during rinse
if this is a top loading machine. turn it off the pull the drain hose up about six inches but do not remove it from the wall drain you should here water flowing out of the hose once the water has stopped restart you machine with the hose in the sam e position then it should fill up to the proper level and start washing. all this is provided it is not over flowing on the floor.
