pull tray out load a couple sheets look underneath and see if paper is lifted up when closing paper drawer. If the paper is not raised to the up position you have broken the tray lift mechanism and it is not worth fixing. You can jam an eraser underneath the tray to manually raise the tray to do a dodgy fix.
The paper light flashing because there is some paper inside the printer. Open the front cover and remove the cartridge and look inside for the jammed paper. Remove the jammed paper and insert the cartridge , closed the front cover and switch on the printer.
It will help you to solve the problem.
My red light flashing problem on myHL-2040 was caused bythe plastic horizontal rod out of alignment in the back ofthe printer. Steps:
1. Open the back cover.
2. Gently pull the tab toward toopen the Rear Chute Cover (plasticflap) inside (page 78 of User's Manual).
3. Look closely at the bottom rod ofthe Rear Chute Cover tomake sure everything is aligned. The two"tabs"(one long and one very short) on this rod should fit right into theallocatedslots.
4. If not, adjust the rod so theright end extension of therod will block the paper sensor when the chute coveris pushed in by the backcover.
Hope this helps - I wasted hourstrying to fix this problem.
Make sure to clean all the rollers you can see and make sure to check the paper sensor, and clean all rollers and paper paths with some Isopropyl Alcohol (AKA rubbing alcohol)
