I have Toshiba m5, having windows vista 32 bits. It's touchpad stopped working after windows update somewhere in Dec 08. I was sitting on it as I had an external (logitech) mouse using...but not having touchpad is really inconvenenient...so need to have the problem resolved. (in Device Manager it shows HID-compliant mouse)
BTW in between I have twice replaced the laptop keeping same hard disk, bt still touchpad doesn't work...so appears that it is not physical hardware problme but the software problem.
fyi I have bitlocker installed on my machine...don't think that could be a problem, but that's something differen than usal laptops, so thought would inform.
I just did detetct hardware changes, but it doesn't show touchpad in device manager...not sure whether it is supposed to show that...also I checked bios settings ensuring pointing device option is se to on...but just for reconfirmation I can do that again if you inform how to do that.
In device manager all the devices are listed...so I see mouse, keyboardetc....somehow touchpad is not listed as a device in device manager.
Hope that helps! In device manager all the devices are listed...so I see mouse, keyboardetc....somehow touchpad is not listed as a device in device manager.

Go to the Toshiba Support Global site http://support.toshiba.com/ Insert the correct Model number (the one you gave is incorrect), the Click GO. Click the Driver and Updates Button, locate the driver, select the version of Windows 8 (32 bits) or 64 bits. Download the driver and install it. Usually you should take the latest version.
That is normal, because the touchpad requires a driver. Windows 7, fortunately, comes with driver installation through the Windows Update.
Simply launch Windows update (Start Menu> type "Windows Update" > hit 'enter'), and select all the updates and hit update. You could also manually do it, by going to Toshiba's website, finding your computer model in the "support" category, and finding the appropriate touch-pad driver. (I believe it would be called "Synaptic Touchpad Driver").

Have you checked the settings of your synaptics? Usually there's an Icon on the taskbar for synaptics you can right click it and check if "disable touchpad if usb pointing device is present" is checked, if so uncheck it then your touch pad should work again.
Here's a link for a step by step instruction though this is for windows xp but steps are the same. Hope this works for you:

If anyone has recently purchased an HP Mini Netbook they might notice one thing not working after a fresh install of Windows 7. The touchpad scrolling doesn't seem to work after fresh install of Windows 7 x32. Read below to find out what you need to get it working. The nice thing is, Windows Updates should pick up everything else automatically.
First thing you will need to do is download the Synaptics Touchpad Driver from their website. I have included the link to the download page below
If this is a netbook, most likely you are running 32-bit of Windows 7 and so you will need to click on "Windows Vista 32-bit Edition v10.1.8" while on Synaptics' website.
Once you download it, simply double click on it to run it and then you will have to restart your computer.
No configuration is necessary. Once you have restarted, you will once again have your touchpad scrolling back.
I had the exact same problem after upgrading to windows 7 32 bit Home Premium on my Acer 3680 series laptop. After researching the problem at both the Acer site and the touchpad manufacturer's site, I discovered that sometimes Windows 7 doesn't support all features of older touchpads and there is no solution for this problem (which I like, anyway).
The drivers for the original touchpad are not always supported by Windows 7, which say, for instance, worked in Vista.
I tried emulation mode, etc., but the scroll buttons didn't work after updating to windows 7.
So, I just gave up and tried to adapt to the new operating system/touchpad function.
Manufacturers usually drop support for older devices after some time. Specially for printers and scanners the support is even more limited; most of them (if not all of them) offer warranty of one year.
Your best shot is to try the Vista drivers. For printing you shouldn't have problems. When you install the printer Windows have generic drivers for supported (current/older) devices. This driver should work for printing.
In device manager all the devices are listed...so I see mouse, keyboardetc....somehow touchpad is not listed as a device in device manager.
Hope that helps!
Touchpad should be listed in device manager - it isn't listed under "mice and other pointing devices" in device mngr?
