When starting the engine, it shuts down immediately when the ignition key is released. What could be causing that?

You may want to check the gas cap to see if it clogged with dirt. If the gas cap is clear, you more than likely have a carburetor problem. If you need tips on carb. cleaning, feel free to ask.

sounds like you have a primer bulb if you take the bolt that holds the float bowl off and take a tip cleaner that they use for welding tips and clean the holes out of the side and the top it should let the fuel in again that will save you a trip to a service repair shop

stale gas in carburator...take the screw out of the bottom of the carb and let the gas run out...

is the gas in the tank old? if so, try to drain it and put fresh gas in. Pull the spark plug to make sure it is not fouled and replace it or put in a new one. Check to make sure that you do not have the mixture or choke set to run too rich or too lean. If you are at an altitude above 2,500 feet you need to run more lean to compensate.
