Toro 20073 self propeled, walk behind mower-how to replace belt ?

My self propeled lawn mower needs a new drive belt. How do I go about replacing the belt. I can get to the transmission and see the belt. What exactly do I need to do to replace the belt? How much of the mower realy has to come apart? I want to make sure that I don''t get in over my head. Please let me thank you in advance for your thoughts and for your help.

Thank You,
Wayne W

Wait until the mower cools off

1. Remove the drive belt cover from the top of the mower
2. Tip the mower up, being careful to not go too far or the oil and fuels may spill out
3. Remove the mower blade - as I recall the bolt is 5/8" (could be 9/16") You will have to hold the blade from turning (if you have impact tools, this will be much easier)
4. Remove the blade
5. Pull the pulley out or off and remove the belt - be careful to not lose the crankshaft "woodruff" key - it's the little piece of half/moon shaped metal that keeps the pulley from spinning on the crankshaft.
6. Reverse the steps to reinstall

You MUST make sure the blade is tight when you reinstall it. Also, the blade usually fits over a couple of pins - make sure they are lined up properly and the blade is installed right-side up.

I have a 1987 Toro GTS Self propelled walk behind mower- My question is that it runs fine but but seems to be slippling and can't get out of it's own way

  • Check for belt stretching even if it looks good. Next possibility
Is worn smooth, or oily surfaces on drive wheels. Can you tell if it slips on drive wheel, or those driven. Some Hondas have belt tensioners which can be too loose. See if axle on drive wheel is in a slotted, rather than round whole, meaning you could loosen/retighten while putting pressure on it to lengthen distance to driven wheels.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

My toro walk behind self propelled blade disengages how do I adjust it

No adjustment, ensure no obstruction on drive end of cable, replace cable, probably stretched over time.

I have a Toro Proline walk behind . Problems with the self propel

I suspect the drive belt, not the Hydro. Especially if the drive belt was never replaced. The belts are known to stretch and wear out over time. It's a cheap part.

Gaining access to change a drive belt on mower

the belt cover should have screws with the heads on top of the deck, then there is a guide which keeps the belt in the engine pulley with 2 or 3 bolts you might be able ot get it on the gearbox with just those off and a bit of prying etc.

Replace the cable traction (part #105-1844)

I just replaced mine and it was a little difficult and took me roughly an hour to do. First, download the walk behind power mover drive systems at https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt?space=CommunityPage&cached=true&parentname=CommunityPage&parentid=1&in_hi_userid=30166&control=SetCommunity&CommunityID=225&PageID=30031#manualsResultPage

While they do not specifically address replacing the cable, you can find out how they do it when replacing the drive belt. As I said, it took me about an hour and I just about had to remove the transmission and rear drive assembly in order to unhook the original cable. Good luck!
