The "dished" or relieved of the top of the piston goes below the valves. Note the piston of the valves in the head an orient the piston relief below them.

Look closely at this exploded diagram.
It appears the piston 'relief' goes to the flywheel side.

you have a needle valve stuck open. i am not familiar with your model but if you can remove the float bowl and clean it out maybe replace the needle and seat and the float it should fix the problem good luck.

I live 3 miles from where these are made, and I had a hard time getting a replacement part for a homelite tiller. All of these are made by the same company.
