Please check your speaker cables. Make sure that all of them are seated properly, none is touching each other or to the body of receiver.
Are you using banana plugs for connecting speaker or just directly. Some times even a little tiny frayed speaker cable touching the receiver could trigger the protect mode. Be careful, since protect mode is sometimes not fast enough to activate and it could blow a few trasistors in the power output circuit.
Please take out all the speaker cables, unplug your receiver from the mains and try to restart without any cables plugged. If it powers on then you are lucky.
If not and the receiver still goes into protect mode or wont turn on then it possible that there are bad connections on the main board or have some blown transistors. How old is your system? if its still under warranty then you should contact Onkyo immidiately.

Hold video1 and press speakers A button, it will say "clear" If the message protect appears again, then its service time.

Otherwise, do your bose speakers play out load on other systems?

This is an indication of an internal problem. Typically this is shorted output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $25-$40 range for this repair.

To answer your question;
Your amplifier goes into protect mode when it detects a fault or condition that could damage the speakers and/or the output stage.
Often caused by shorted outputs.
Although this does`nt tell you much on how to fix this problem, the best help i can give you at this point is to tell you to have it looked at by a repair shop.
