Newer High efficiency A/C's are not compatible with the older systems for many reasons. They use a different refrigerant, have a different oil in the system for lubrication and they operate at higher pressures than the older systems using refrigerant 22 which is being phased out. It is standard procedure to replace the entire system when upgrading.

Yes it is a little red button on the back lower part of the heat pump by the lineset. it will most commnly trip in heating mode if the filter is dirty. or in A/C mode if there is an issue with the outdoor fan motor or dirty coils.

First off check your air filters and make sure the indoor fan is running. If there is not enough air flow over the coil it will cause this. If those are OK you may have a low refrigerant charge.
