My Onkyo tx-sr606 7.1 channels receiver keeps on turning off by itself. I followed the troubleshooting guide by ''booting'' and it stills turn off by itself, it just would not ''stay on''. The manual says to contact the technical representative. I am afraid that I have a ''bad'' receiver. I just bought it about 6 months ago. Please help...
Hi, when the unit shuts off by itself, it means that the protection circuity inside has been activated. it can be a problem with the receiver itself or it is just detecting something hooked up to it that can cause possible damage so it shuts off.
you would need to disconnect everything from the back and by itself, try to turn it on, see if it will stay on and then crank the volume way up to max. if it stays on, the receiver is ok and you then need to rehook your devices one by one starting with the speakers until you determine the one causing the receiver to shut off.
however, if the receiver shuts off and won't turn on even by itself, it means that the problem is internal and it either has to go back to your dealer for an exchange or it has to be sent to a repair center for servicing.

I had this problem, and it was one of the speakers. I disconnected the right rear speaker and now it works fine. I asked a guy at Visions how to solve it so I can hook my speaker back up and he said that banana plugs prevent wires from crossing and sending a backwards signal (causing the receiver to turn itself off). Hope that helps!
As well as the excellent advice given - instead of unplugging stuff - you could run the set up mic with the 606 and it will "sense" if any speakers are not properly connected.

my 606 is doing the same thing.. If the volume is 30 or higher after 15 min the unit shuts down. I will try what was sugested by Mingkong. I will let everyone know how I make out
My 606 goes into stand-by mode when either the tv volume or the reciever volume is turned up past 53. I got this reciever 4 months ago and it worked fine when it was hooked up to my old 27" Sony Wega.
Last week I bought a new Sony Bravia 46" lcd model # KDL40Z4100S. I hooked up the hdmi cable and also the component video cable and audio cable as per the Onkyo instruction manual. this is when I started to have this problem. Would hooking up the hdmi cable when I don't have a subscription to hi def from my cable provider have anything to do with this problem? I don't think it's the av reciever since it worked perfectly with my old tv, and I could crank up the volume as much as I could stand. Please Help!!

the receiver turns off by itself and the standby mode light keep on flashing.
I contacted Onkyo customer service and had them walk me through a trouble shoot session. I disconnected every component and all speakers. I then reconnected each speaker seperately and turned the volume up to the max. The reciever worked perfectly. I then reconnected each a/v component and tested them seperately. Everyone of them worked perfectly on max volume. I then connected everything and watched the TV. No problems. I then played a dvd, no problem. This worked for about 2 weeks, and now I notice that the problem has reappeared, although I can turn the volume to about 50. I don't think it's a problem with the reciever. This could be a TV related problem.
