A hydraulic line broke and after I replaced it, my power steering is not working. It is very hard to turn and it makes a loud whining sound when I try turning the steering wheel in either direction. The steering wheel has a excessive amount of play (almost half a turn) and the steering rod goes up when I turn one direction and down the other direction. Is there a clip on the end of the shaft that may have fallen off? When I raise the front wheels off the ground, I can turn the wheels in both directions without the engine running. All the fluid levels are topped up.

either the steering arm in the bell housing on the right side of the tractor is striped or the colume is broken internaly. the is asuming that all tie rod ends and the bell crank are still atatched.

Like other hydraulic systems, there is probably a procedure for bleeding the lines after loss of most of the fluid. You may still have air trapped in the system and once it works its way to the cylinder, the cylinder is working with air instead of fluid and the air compresses instead of doing work.

Just had same problem with my craftsmen. There is a very inadequate little nylon bushing supposed to keep that shaft stable. When worn out it allows that shaft to move and puts the gears in a bind. It is located on the end closest to arced gear where shaft hooks to drag link. Its a pain.

Look for a nut with a screw driver slot in the middle of it -
Put a wrench on the NUT shape and turn it to the LEFT or counter clockwise. - then turn the SCREW DRIVER SLOT to the LEFT -or counter clockwise.
Then re-tighten the NUT shaped unit by turning it to the RIGHT/
