When I turn it on, I get mainly a picture in middle, heavy on the reds. Sides are darker. Doesn't keep up with movement..lost of "ghosting" of the image, worse at the edges. After running a bit, and turning TV off and on repetedly, it will eventually start working correctly.

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).

we have the same exact tv and it is not even a year old. we are told that it is the display panel and it is a well known problem with this tv. we were also told that there is a shortage of these parts. they had 283 on order, but only received 35. you need to call sony and tell them that you have this problem. they should warranty this for you even if your tv is 3 months past the warranty period. since this is a well known problem with this tv, keep on them.
Testimonial: "It in fact was a part of the lcd panel...the t-con board. I was able to research it and bought a box of parts off of a tv like mine and fixed it. Ron"
