Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets and a fairly simple DIY fix.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

yes it bows at the top with coloured lines. i dont - 1d5e2cf.jpg
7deade1.jpg

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button onlyes it bows at the top with coloured lines. i dont - 47a7bc4.pnging the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video.

Pic of a set thayes it bows at the top with coloured lines. i dont - 7c190d8.jpg fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

Set after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

SOURCE: Convergence

No menu option is a clue to your problem. No menu option for convergence is due to the Micro not seeing a active convergence module in the unit. This is a post check, when the unit is turned on, and on some units, only done at AC power up.

With that in mind, you need to check your (PW=power) pcb for the conv module. This is easy to find, but on most RCA is located on the plastic panel that is in front of the CRTs. On this model, you should see PW conv PCB on left and Conv PCB on right. Top left corner is a plug with two wires, BP611, (i think) which should have like 300v DC. If you dont have the B+ go to the Primary power supply. More then likely you will have it.

If your 300v is there, order the PW conv module. NOTE: most of these modules are rebuild only and cost about 70.00 to rebuild at PTS. Other wise, you can trouble shoot at board level.

ONLY WORK ON THIS IS YOU HAVE CAN SAFELY USE A METER, AND HAVE SOME ELECTRONICAL SKILLS. NOT FOR BEGGINERS!

The screen has bowed lines and different colors no sound

If the model as indicate here (WS-55807) YOU may have two problems: Convergence and a audio problem.

In customer menu select convergence and with the Mitsubishi remote try to adjust the grid of lines so no red etc--if bowed it will not adjust.

This would mean the two stk-392-570 convergence chips this model uses need to be replaced(I have free start to finish instructions for that).

The no sound may and is likely a second issue: speakers in the menu may be switched off etc.

If both happened at the same instant this model has a hard reset(not from front of set but with a 4 digit code and done with the Mitsubishi remote) This sets everything except convergence adjustments back to factory original.

It is called the OPTION menu.

So, did both issues happen at exact same time or what?

Parts for the convergence repair are under 30 dollars total and I can tell you where.

Color convergence off and bowing effect on top and bottom of picture

Yes, if you have replaced the IC's correctly (and used the correct IC specifications) then the issue could be with faulty resistors and / or capacitors.

RCA model P61950

fl231 is the convergence fuse, and is soldered to the board in proximity of the convergence ICS, on RCA rear projection TVs.

If
fl231 has blown, TV usually does not turn on at al, if you get bowed picture, that means that the convergence ICs must be replaced.

The fuse is on the same board where you find convergence ICs, if the fuse had blown, or the pico fuses at the base of the STK convergence ics had blown, the STKs must be replaced.
There is need of purchasing the service manual to do the job.

The repair shuld be done by a technician.

This is the convergence IC, model may vary:

Colours split and vertical bowed green line at to and bottom of s

This is a convergence problem that can be either poor solder connections at the convergence ICs or defective ICs. If you can solder and feel comfortable working inside the set where there are potentially dangerous high voltages, update this and further details and instructions will be provided.
