Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8
Acer = F5. Display Toggle-Over key.
sorry tried those already but no luck... i am even tryin to get it to boot to ubuntu (which it did once by me pressing random buttons like F1 & F2 followed by pressing ESC a few times) i'm going crazy but i love a PC to challenge my patience... lolz
A) What do you mean almost booted to Ubuntu? You runnin' Windows, Ubuntu, or a dual boot? Secondly, suggest you disconnect the Video Cable on the motherboard side. May be you have enough damage the system is being shorted.http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/To... Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery. Go to Step 8. Remove the 8 screws along the Top. (Battery Compartment side), and the 3 going along the Middle; left to right. Turn the laptop over, open it; remove the Keyboard Cover, and remove the Keyboard To A Point. Do NOT disconnect the Keyboard Cable from motherboard. At a slight angle, (LCD screen side up), slide the Keyboard towards the LCD screen a little, then lift on LCD screen side, roll over towards you. Lay upside down on the Palm Rest Cover, Keyboard Cable still attached. Page 2, Steps 9 through 11. (You can click on any photo to enlarge) Click on Step 14 photo. Shows Keyboard removed. (But don't) See the Video Cable connection TO motherboard, shwon on the Left? Unplug it. Now try again. Not sure what you meant by Ubuntu, whether dual boot, or what; but this could have a large bearing on the problem NOW. Replace the LCD screen?http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/To... Also, how did the screen get broken? Questioning is inline with, are there any other hardware components that may have been damaged. Drop the laptop while it's on, and the whole scenario changes here. That isn't like an LCD screen that was accidentally broken.
i had it for quite awhile sittin there an decided to bring it back to life especially since my 3 kids (aged 3&5) are very interested in play hangaroo, bakin cakes & other games on "my" laptop i became wary of this and (so as not to keep 'em backward) i decided that i'd give them their own to destroy... i mean play on lolz so i got it wit a smashed screen and the (original) harddisk not workin, my guess a it took a fall an got quite a shock that ended its life temporarily... i took out the harddisk an placed a ubuntu 12 dvd in it and after playin around a bit got it to boot wit the ubuntu disk, the system is good other than a totally busted screen an a harddisk that was already replaced by a 250gig and an added 2gigs of ram, i left in the original 512 got no beep errors (it booted with the 512+2gig) gettin the screen soon but they (the kids) are even more eager than me so i was hoping i cud of booted wit the external monitor seems like the bios needs configuration but i guess in all due time as i tried all the basics... shud i trow in the hat till i get the screen?
So you're stating you don't want to try disconnecting the Video Cable, and see if this was the problem, or part of the problem?
You maybe able to get a replacement screen from this WEB site. LCD screens and Inverters www.lcdparts.net

first, you go in the BIOS setup..check if the soundcard is disable or not...if disable try to enable and boot to the windows..if its already enable but still not working, check the sound card driver at www.toshiba.com and download driver for sound of your laptop....

The Toshiba BIOS password is stored on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS battery won't work. There is a hardware hack solution (a dongle) to remove the password.
Buy a 25 pin male D Sub connector and join the following pins together by soldering wires to these pins. Make sure the wires do not short against each other. The pins are numbered on the connector.
1-5-10,
2-11,
3-17,
4-12,
6-16,
7-13,
8-14,
9-15
Plug the dongle into the printer port of your laptop and power up the laptop. Press F2 function key to get into the BIOS and then remove the password. Your laptop should boot up without the password and you can remove the dongle.

Chances are your CMOS battery is dead, it can be replaced inexpensively if you do it yourself. After taking the laptop apart, locate the battery, it looks like a large watch battery. When you remove it, note the battery type and run to your nearest battery store for a replacement.

Hi
That would be the BIOS password is open the ram
compartment and pull up the plastic sticker or whatever you want to
call it between the motherboard and the ram. There is a jumper called
"CMOS_CLR1" use a screwdriver to short out the pins and it clears the
CMOS.
