Brother MFC7820N BARELY transfers toner to paper? New cartridge.

Was having "No Toner" error, I got rid of it, and the printer is now powered on, shows no errors, and is accessible over my network. The scanner works fine.

The problem now is any time I try to print anything, only the top right hand side of the pages get any toner to stick, and BARELY any toner at that. Just enough for me to squint really hard and see that it's printing what it's supposed to be printing. It does this no matter where the document comes from: different scanning software, windows test page, built-in copier.

We purchased a replacement toner cartridge, and I'm pretty sure that even the one that was inside of it was full because I imagine my mom's boss tried putting a new toner cartridge in there first -- not sure they're both full though. Both of the cartridges give the same result: barely any toner sticks to the top right of the page.

Anyone know where my malfunction might be?  If i could just get some pointers as to what component sounds like the culprit, I'm sure i could manage to fix or replace it myself.

Also, I'm very curious as to what this little white tab is on the side of the toner cartridge. It's located right next to the blue release tab. On one of my toner cartridges, this tab is all the way back (towards the blue releaee tab) and on the other it's in the opposite position, all the way to the other side. They're both stuck like that pretty firmly. I can't figure out for the life of me what they are, other than perhaps something to let the machine know what's going on in the toner reservoir. If that's true, logic would dictate that one is empty and one is full? I can't find info/specs for this cartridge anywhere on the net.

Cartridge Model: Brother TN-350

27 Years with Brother alone?  Wowza.  Thanks alot for the advice.

This printer was dumped on us by my mom's boss, who'd given up on it after purchasing a new drum and a new cartridge for it, and still not being able to get it to work.

So I've given the machine what should have been a brand new drum, AND a brand new cartridge to work with.  The old drum and cartridge give the exact same results as the new one.

My dad and I were certain that it was something like the fuser or the corona/transfer wires, maybe even the laser or something -- we thought the cartridge was brand new.  You're sure it's the cartridge?

Sorry to question your advice, but this was just a pet project and I'd hate to end up with two or three working cartridges and a broken printer still, not to mention down $50 or so.

You will need to replace the toner cart. there is not enough toner to spread evenly on the mag roller .

Getting Full Yield in Brother Printers - Preventing Early Supply Failures

Brother laser printers, fax machines and multifunctions all use a toner reclaim system. That means the used or left over toner (along with paper dust and debri) is recycled into the new toner cartridge supply. There is no waste section for the leftover toner and debri. This design is efficient however their are some short falls that you need to address. The toner cartridge supply is slowly contaminated with debri and dust that will send the cartridge down prematurely if your not using a good quality paper.

In addition, Brother Drum Units (ie DR-400, DR-500, DR-510, etc...) are expensive and suffer from the same premature failure problems. There is a charging brush and transfer roller inside the front top inside of the drum that drags on the drum surface to charge and discharge it properly for toner transfer. If you use poor quality the built up paper dust and debri interferes with this system and ultimately prevents it from working prperly. Here's a photo of a newer drum that failed due to the use of poor paper. Note the paper dust embedded in the transfer roller (top), caught up in the charge brush (center) and actually laying on the drum (bottom).

Here's a closeup of the charge brush so you can see the problem better below.

Below is the damage that bad paper caused. This DR-520 drum pictured is rated for 25,000 pages but due to low quality paper lasted just over 7,000. This was caused by a "Store Brand" paper.

Here below is a photo of the inside of a brother toner cartridge contaminated with paper dust and debri due to la ow quality super store brand paper. Note all the white paper dust in the toner.

To get the full yield from your Brother supplies, simply use GOOD QUALITY PAPER. STAY AWAY FROM STORE BRAND PAPERS as they go out on low price bid rather than to meet a tight quality standard. I would recommend a HP Brand paper as it's an "ALWAYS KNOWN GOOD" paper. The cheapest on the HP branded papers is HP Office and it works well.

Hope this has helped you understand the importance of using good quality paper in your brother machines. If you found this helpful, please rate it with a FIXYA as significant time and effort was used to help you.

Thanks and Happy Printing

My MFC9840cdw quit printing or copying. The page is completely blank.

Probably the high voltage power supply is bad. This is what charges the transfer roller which allows the toner to cling to the roller and then transfer to the paper. No charge = no toner leaving the toner cartridge.

I have a Brother HL-2142 Compact High quality mono laser printer and I am having trouble putting the new toner cartridge back in as it flashes error and the paper gets jammed. I dont know where the...

Open the front door and pull the whole toner and drum unit out of printer. The toner locking lever is usually on the left hand side as you see it and is usually blue in colour. It needs compressing and at the same time lift the front of the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Your new cartridge will simply lock into place. When you install the complete unit and close the door, the new toner cartridge will reset your printers counter.

I have a Brother MFC 8220 with a nonBrother cartridge and the original Brother drum. No problems printing until today. I tried to send a 4x6 piece of thin card stock through the front manual feed on the...

There are possibly 2 reasons why this is happening.
1. The drum unit may have been damaged in some way but I doubt it. Check fully that all contacts are in the right place at either side of the drum unit. A contact may be slightly bent.
2. Check the Transfer Roller is in its correct position. The transfer roller is the felt type roller that is positioned in the printer under where the drum unit goes. If this has got out of position then that could also cause the faint printing. Check contacts in printer are not bent.

Brother MFC-7420 just started printing a shadow image

Sounds like a bad drum cartridge. Pull the toner/drum cartridge out of the machine and set it down. Press down on a (blue?) tab to release the toner cartridge, and you can lift the toner cartridge out of the drum cartridge. There is a cleaning blade in there - a soft plastic blade that rides against the drum and scrapes off toner that didn't get transferred to the paper. If it gets stuck off the drum surface, images repeat a few inches (one drum circumference) down the page.

A new DR-350 drum unit should fix it. have the machine's power on when replacing it. While the door is open, touch the CLEAR key. The display will read "REPLACE DRUM?" or something like that. Press 1 for Yes.

My printer is telling me 'Toner Life End' after I've replaced it.

I was having the same problem with my MFC7820N.  To be honest, I think I got a little lucky poking around with a screwdriver, because the problem seemingly dissapeared.  However, I don't recommend it unless you know what your doing.
I did come across this solution on the internet afterwards though:
Open the front cover of the machine (open the compartment where you insert the toner cartridge)  Wait for "front cover open" to show on the screen.  Press the "Options" button, then press *00 and wait a few seconds, then close the front cover.
This resets something or other, I imagine it will work for you.  Hopefully it does, and if so you're welcome :)
Now, if you can just tell me exactly what is causing my MFC7820N to only have a tiny amount of toner stick to the top right of the page, we'll call it even.

Illegal toner

Sorry, this sounds outside my experience.  The only trigger for the 'illegal toner' message that I know is that the cartridge has the wrong plug on it.  A 'proper' Brother cartridge will have the same plug as the rest and be very easy to check.
I have both refilled empty cartridges and used commercially refilled ones. As I said, the only time I have seen this message was with the wrong plug.  When I used non-spec toner I got 'ghosting' as the toner stayed too long on the transfer belt.  No error message, just poor quality printing.
OPC belts appear to need changing fairly often - I am on my third.  Take it out and have a look (note that it is light sensitive, do it quickly in dim light).  If it is not a clear shiny green it may not be up to spec.  As a quick fix you can reset the 'replace OPC belt' message, but they do wear out.  It is used to transfer toner from the cartridge to the paper - so failure means poor quality printing rather than a refusal to print.
Sorry I cannot help further.
