empathy for ubuntu works with most messenger formats including yahoo. empathy is installed along with linux on ubuntu 10.10 so may already be installed on your system. ubuntu 10.10 is free and I guess you must now be out of your 60 day included support. you might want to check out the ubuntu forums on the correct syntax to download and install programs in ubuntu http://ubuntuforums.org/ the valusoft offering appears to be ubuntu 8.04 which is way out of date as we're on 10.10 which is the latest stable release and includes a software installer.
1.Repartition HD to fit Ubuntu 2. Install Ubuntu 3. Upon starting computer, select operating system (Vista or Ubuntu) You could also use Wubi which is a program on the ubuntu 8.10 cd that allows you to install Ubuntu right from Vista and it will run just like it's an app per say. Just to warn you though, it will not run as fast and if you are installing this on a laptop it won't be able to hibernate. Also it doesn't require you to create a separate partition to install Ubuntu. This could potentially be a bad thing, depends on how you look at it.
You will have two options either you can download the CD version or DVD version. Also you will have the case studis, online support and the documentation for installing Ubuntu.
