Agitator shaft replace - KitchenAid K45SS Classic Stand Mixer

  • Anonymous Feb 11, 2013

I am trying to replace the agitator shaft, and want to know how much of the mixer I have to take apart to get at the shaft. Do I have to take the motor apart, or can I just remove the Gearcase motor housing? If I just need to remove the housing, can I just pry it up after removing the screws on the bottom?

Yes

If you have not gotten this taken care of yet. Turn your mixer upside down and remove the silver drip ring and then take out the drive pin with a punch, the pin holds the planetary on and in place. now with 2 screwdrivers from position 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock gently but firmly pry up until the planetary breaks loose and comes of the center shaft, now you will need some snap ring plyers to remove the agitator shaft, once you look at it you will see how to take apart easy.

Hobart h 600 mixer dough hook keeps coming off during operation. What would cause this

Take a look where the agitator pin engages with the dough hook.
Either the agitator pin (sticks out from the agitator shaft) is worn out or the groove in the dough hook where the pin should sit has elongated and worn. Either pin replacement is in order or new hook is required...possibly both.

Professional 600 575 watts 6 qt. beater stem is loose and lets beater drop onto bowl.

b68be83b-c0cb-45d6-8d74-337f1cf098bd.jpgThe part you see is called the planetary, it has two shafts, the long one is called the center shaft and if it is falling off you need a new planetary, the second shaft (shorter) is called the agitator shaft (the beater attaches to it, if this is the culprit then1 you are not attaching the beater correctly2 the locking pin that the beater attaches to to hold it in place is missing3 you have way too much "gunk" build up on the agitator shaft and the beater is not attaching correctly4 if the beater falls into the bowl with the agitator shaft still attached you have three additional problems a) the snap ring a top the agitator shaft has broken off or come off which in turn means that
b) the gear at the top of the shaft has come off and may very well been knocked around and possibly damaged beyond future use which means that you will need a new one and also
c) the shaft pin that holds the agitator gear in place has come out or been broken also
the fix is easy and your parts cost $ will be from $30.00 to $80.00 dollars depending on which parts you need. Now before you get palpitations, cost are listed as a possible need
1 new planetary $30.00, you may not need
2 new agitator shaft and gear assembly $27.00, pretty sure that you need but maybe not
3 new gasket $6.00
4 new gear grease $6.00 KA says 2 oz. (don't buy a 2lb (26.00 bucks) can when you only need 2 oz).

Without more clarity or a picture I can't help further. but before you start tearing you machine apart go to the KA website and get a parts list for your mixer

I need to replace the rotatating column on my KitchenAid mixer.

Hi ALLENJUJU. To replace the agitator shaft will require a significant amount of extra effort, but will be well worth it in terms of gratification and reward for being able to successfully do it yourself. First, I’ll assume your mixer is no longer under warranty. Second, I’ll assume you have your Repair Parts manual on-hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled: “Case Gearing And Planetary Unit” which shows you an exploded view of all the mechanical parts and assemblies for your mixer.
I highly recommend the following website that provides you step by step instructions with pictures (worth every bit of a 1000 words) to gain access to your planetary housing and agitator shaft. The mixer displayed is a different model (tilt-up) than yours, but the ‘insides’ are the same.
It would be helpful to have the following tools available as you begin to disassemble your mixer: a flat screw driver, a small Phillips screw driver or a punch drive, a pair of retaining clip/ring pliers, and a hammer.
You will need to remove the Planetary Drip Ring (Illus. No. 42) and Pin (Illus No. 25), which secures the Planetary Housing (Illus. No. 33) to the Center Vertical Shaft (Illus. No 19). (See pictures 6, 7 & 10, 11 from the link).
You’ll need the punch drive or small screw driver with a smaller diameter than the pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Rotate the planetary housing to expose the retaining pin with the vertical (center) shaft.
After removing the Planetary Housing, remove all the residual grease from the 18 tooth Agitator Shaft Pinion Gear (Illus. No. 47), which should expose a Retaining Clip (Illus. No. 61), which will need to be removed. With the Retaining clip removed, the pinion gear and Shim Washer (Illus No. 45) should easily slide off the top of the agitator shaft and you should be able to pull the agitator shaft down through the planetary housing bushing.
Take your new, replacement agitator shaft (be sure you’ve got the lower groove pin ordered, too, and insert through the bottom Planetary bushing. Replace the shim washer, 18 T Pinion Gear and Retaining Ring. Grease up the whole works with new grease, and reassemble the opposite of how you took it apart.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.
I hope this helps - hslincoln, Burke, VA

There is a knob that the whisk attaches to from

Hi ALLENJ740, I believe the ‘knob’ that you’re referring to on the agitator shaft (rotating column) is called a ‘groove pin’, and you should be able to replace it yourself. Before you get started, it would be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand.
Locate Illus. No. 40, Agitator Shaft, Part No. 4176067. Unfortunately the ‘geniuses’ at KA didn’t identify agitator shaft ‘groove pin’ for this model series...duh?
Sooo download this Repair Parts manual file K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB) for a K45SSW model. The K45SS model and your K5SS model share the same agitator shaft part number, and in this manual Illus. No. 21 identifies the ‘groove pin’ (Part No. 9704677), which is the ‘knob’ part you need to replace.
You will need a punch drive with a smaller diameter than the groove pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Rotate the planetary agitator shaft so that the flush end of the groove pin with the agitator shaft is facing you (the extended part (knob) of the pin – or where it used to be - is facing away from you). Align your punch drive on the end of the groove pin and give it a good whack; repeat until the pin starts to come out the other side of the agitator shaft. Continue tapping until the pin comes completely free. Note the groves on the pin as you will need to orient the replacement groove pin the same way when you place it back on the agitator shaft. Just reverse the process. You’ll want to tap the groove pin home to make sure it’s securely in place. You don’t want it to come loose while mixing.
Also, for future reference here are links to three excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer. The mixers displayed in the links are different KA models, but the principles are the same.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble, troubleshoot, determine appropriate repair parts and reassemble your mixer to get it working again. Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Hobart A200T - agitator shaft replacement

Lefty, It's called a tapered pin. It can be removed by using a punch which is a bit smaller than the pin. This tapered pin can only be driven out from one side. Put a bit of WD-40 or some other penetrating oil in the pin area then figure out which end of the pin is smallest. Gently tap it out with the punch and a hammer, only use as much force as necessary. Only replace the shaft if it's badly damaged. You may be able to get at it by removing the four screws on the attachment hub. Remove the hub and see if you can get at it from there. If you can't, you should be able to get at it from the top. If you do replace it, you might consider replacing the shaft bearing and the bearing on the planetary shaft. If you find this solution helpfull, please rate it. Good luck. ricardok45

Oil seal

1. Remove the acorn nut, hex nut, and washer that hold the "planetary" agitator section on the transmission shaft.
2. Remove the trim ring (if any) around the same.
3. The agitator section should now be able to be worked free.
4. Remove the retainer clip on the top of the agitator shaft. (Some models have a pair of hex nuts here; if so, remove those.)
5. Pry the gear up and off the shaft. Remove the square key from the shaft keyway at the same time.
6. Tap gently on the top of the agitator shaft to drive it out from the bearings and grease seal.
7. Recommend removing and replacing the top bearing at this time; it's inexpensive to replace, if you're in this deep.
8. Use a suitable diameter piece of round steel stock to drive out the lower bearing and oil seal. I don't recommend using the agitator shaft.
9. Clean thoroughly, insert a new bottom bearing and oil seal, drive in place with a rubber mallet.
10. Replace agitator shaft through oil seal and bearing, tap gently into place.
11. Fill cavity with approved lubricant. I use USP-grade mineral oil, as it is food-safe and provides satisfactory lubricity.
11. Install top bearing, tap gently into place.
12. Reverse steps 5-1 to reassemble.
