The buttons on my DirecTV RC32 remote have gotten "sticky" and have to be pushed hard to work the receiver. I have read about taking it apart to clean the rubber button panel and the circuit board but I'm having trouble taking it apart. I've removed two screws in the battery compartment and tried prying it open but it only opens up halfway, then stops. What next?
There are a total of SIX screws. You have already found two in the battery compartment. There are four more under the GREY panel on the front of the remote. That grey panel pries out; there are two tabs on the lower sides and one on the top, above the > button, that hold it in. Should not be hard to get it out to reveal the four screws. Take them all out, and the remove easily pries apart for service access.
The solution posted by GP49 was very helpful. A few things to add would be the light gray oval pannel that surrounds the yellow "select" button is not easly pryed up unless you try it from the sides near the "guide" or "exit" buttons.
Once all of the screws are removed, there is a tab on each side of the remote where the top of the remote (the white part) meets the bottom (the black part). The tabs would be about where the 4 and 6 buttons are.
very helpful saved me $15 for a new remote they were going to charge me.
1. Remove battery compartment door, remove the two small screws there
2.Pry off the gray oval panel (as RP220 says)
3. Remove the four screws under that
That's it, my mode selection slider switch wasn't working properly (operated my dvd player when it was in satelite mode) messed around with it a little, put it back together and it worked fine. Funny how directv didn't suggest it :)

The oval-shaped plastic panel should be removed first to reveal the 4 other philip screws. There is a "clip" on that panel, located between "<" and "GUIDE" on one side, and ">" and "EXIT" on another side, they can be pushed in to release from the between the "grey" and "black" part. Once this panel released and removed, the other 4 screws will reveal.
Two other suggestions: (1) When a remote has been dropped several times, the infra-red LED emitters will bend on their wire leads changing the aiming direction of the remote. Bend these LEDs (at the business end of the remote) so they point straight ahead. (2) While you are inside the remote, stretch the conical battery contact spring (underside, middle of board) to increase the contact force on the batteries. These two fixes will restore the operating range of the remote.
Thanks for the info above. I had two RC32 remotes that were not responding to button presses in many cases.
When I opened them up, I found moisture on the circuit board contact pads under the push buttons and up in the "bellows" around those buttons. I removed all of the moisture and blasted it with a can of air.
Also cleaned all of the gunge in and around the buttons and faceplates, checked the LEDs and tensioned the battery springs. Both work great now!
One more thing - the 4 screws under the grey plate are longer than the two in the battery compartment. Avoid switching them when reassembling the control.
