Fullbacks must also be able to catch high kicks. Like a punt returner in football, they must catch and either run back or return a kick immediately to advance their team and stop an attack. Continuing the football analogy assuming you are American, they serve as a singe safety, covering both sides of the field most times in defense. In offense, they "see-all" and can command other backs to form and develop an asymmetrical attack based on opponents positons, gaps and sudden lapses in field coverage. They often burst ahead as the last man in attacks streaking past a teammate carrying the ball to receive quick laterals at great speed hitting a gap in the defensive line that they identified early to score. They are a "strike runner"; a valuable highly skilled position. Kicking accurately ahead bouncing inbounds and then out of bounds as far as possible like a good punter is a very important role for the fullback.

In order to be a good fullback, male or female, the player must be very fast runner and a great kicker. Since the fullback is the last line of defense, the player must be hyper aware and may need to join the back of the line offensively as well.
