Take pull string housing off. Looks like 3 or 4 screws. Should be able to restring from under side. Either buy new string or if old string is long enough, just tie knot on the end. Good luck

SOURCE: Yard Machines - Won't shift into gear

The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides

You should be able to remove the old one with a screw driver or needle nose pliers. The new one should have a new gasket with it.

SOURCE: lawn mower keeps dying

Remove gas cap. If mower now runs without stalling, your problem is the vent in the gas cap is blocked. Replace the cap. Common problem!

SOURCE: oil change in yard man lawn mower

Some mowers are designed to drain oil out of the dipstick tube. remove dipstick and tilt the mower to allow oil to run out into a drain pan. 2/3 rds of a quart or 20 oz is what to expect.

SOURCE: Webb Diplomat 350 Petrol Lawn Mower stops running 10 minutes

The 'DIPLOMAT' series of WEBBs is bad news, its NOT a WEBB! Webb were swallowed by qualcast-atco-suffolk, who dunped Webbs tooling, & dressed up punches & commodores in thin disguises, dumped the briggs & stratten engine for their own alloy job, & charged a rip off premium for the Webb decals!
The qualcast suffolk alloy engine suffers from a WIPAC electronic ignition unit. As it gets old, it fails, sometimes completely, sometimes as it warms up. Once cool, it works for a while again.
Not too hard to replace, but hard on the wallet, £69 genuine, £40 fake! On the whole its not too bad an engine if cared for & oil changed often. better to look on ebay for a cheap used HONDA engine & transplant! R-E-L-I-A-B-L-E !............I did! ( £35 honda gc series, 5,5hp! )

I have a yardman model number 12A-979L401. I recently went to start my mower and the string was broke. But that is not the only issue. The whole top peice where the string is wound all the small metal...

Yes. Almost all of the mowers these days are made by one company (MTD) and most of them have similar engines on them (Briggs and Stratton). The whole "Top Piece" can be replaced and even have a new pull cord put on it. I suggest you go to your local back yard "Power Equipment Shop" and just have them install a "New" one, which they probably have laying around from junk mowers. I take them off and refurbish them, just for such purposes. I have actually started rewinding those springs when they pop out, but that task is sooo NOT fun to do. Do not mess with the rivets; that whole top comes off with four bolts on the side (rear) and front of the machine. Best of luck to you! James

MTD Yard Machine CD000147 6HP 21 inch ..The problem is "Cannot pull the starter string for start. The string or engine stuck to pull the starter. We didn't use it for the whole winter.

The operator presence bail must be in the run position to release the flywheel brake. If you can't pull the rope with the bail in the run position, your rope is fouled. You will have to remove the shroud and take it to a repair shop.

Won't retract the pull string

The pull cord assembly either has something jammed in there or it's busted. Take the 3 or 4 bolts out that hold in on to the top, and inspect it for damage. If there's nothing in there or it's not damaged it might have just slipped off the spring. Rewind your cord and reinstall it.
