KitchenAid k5a arcing on control board

My K5A is arcing on one of the two contacts on the control board. Any idea why? Replace the control board? Was working fine, then was stuck on high speed. Capacitor was shorted. Replaced with Radio Shack 0.1uF 250V. Worked fine after that, till it started sounding weird. Watched it run with cover off and observed the arcing and see marks from that. I don't remember any arcing there before.

You've accidentally bent the contacts on the control plate, bend them toward each other, they should make flush contact when stir is engaged. Also, turn the bottom screw in till the arcing stops, this will also increase the speed in stir. You further adjust it by turning the top two screws counterclockwise to slow it down. In stir mode, there should be only 10 revolutions in 10 seconds, 60p/m.

It was stuck on high speed because the phase control board went out, your fix may not be absolutely 100% and it is now causing an uneven distribution of the electric charge in the mixer and it is arching. My recommendation is to replace the speed control board (black and copper plate) and the phase control board. i bet it fixes the problem as these are the two parts that regulate the electricity in the mixer. Hope that helps. Buy the way if you don't fix the problem and continue to use the mixer you may have to replace the motor eventually as you can cause the armature and stator to short or burn out.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid K5A mixer 10 speed only runs on fast, no slow speed

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

Can anyone tell me the value of the resistor in a Kitchenaid K5A mixer. I think mine grew legs and walked away. Thanks, Mike

Are there any colors on the resistor or it is missing. If you know what the voltage and current should be in the circuit you can calculate the resistor value.

My wife has a K5A mixer from the '70's that she loves. While I was checking the brushes, I over-tightened the brush cap and broke the threaded part it screws into. Can I get a new part?

The Brush holder caps / covers for the K5 series whether Hobart or Kitchenaid by Whirlpool (after 1986 when Whirlpool bought Kitchenaid from Hobart) will fit the K5-A they just wont be flush like the older Hobart caps. They come in black or white.

Which is the better mixer of these old models: K5A K5-A or K45 SS and what is the difference? KITCHENAID HOBART K5A K5-A 300 WATT MIXER and the KitchenAid Hobart Vintage K45 250 WATT. Thank you

Hello ajlina,

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

Have any more questions please post to this thread and I will be happy to assist. Thank you for using FixYa.

The capacitor on the speed switch is burning out.

I have found that the capacitor is no longer available, along with
any of the motor parts. Armature, brushes, motor end bearing, etc, are not available.

KitchenAid K5 Mixer Bowl Rocks Back & Forth

This may be explained with the bowl assembly. Being a bowl lift mixer, please follow the following steps to make sure the bowl is being secured before mixing:

There are the bowl-holding arms on the left and right hand side of the mixer. You will place the bowl on these arms, securing it onto the pegs.

Also, take your fingertips and press down firmly at the back of the bowl where it is resting against the base. You will hear an audible click as the bowl secures down into a spring latch mechanism on the stand mixer base, allowing the mixing bowl to sit flush and secure.

K5A refurb/repair

First thing check the carbon brushes, when they wear out they arc at the armature. Two black screw covers one either side of the top motor housing. The brushes are keyed to only go back in one way so make a note of which corner of the brush has been shaved off. If you look in the hole with a torch you can see the little blocker in one corner deep down. As a rule it's back top corner on one side and back bottom corner on the other side.

Kitchenaid K5A doesn't turn on

i have had the same problem.Chances are that the thermister has burnt out. This is not a major problem. You can get the part at radio shack for about $1. All you need is a little screwdriver and about 10 minutes and it will be fixed. The thermister is a silver (fuse) that is located on the back of the motor the other side goes to the speed control board. Radio shack sells this thermister in a two pack put one in and tape the other in the cover for the next time this happens. The thermister should be 120v @ either 135 degrees or anything around 150 degrees. The thermister is an overheat limiter that prevents the motor from burning out.
