Kitchen aid hd professional mixer problems with speed controls

My new kitchen aid HD professional mixer on speed 1 starts slow increases to speed 10 then cuts out. High speeds nothing but a hum and occasion the same as above. When i start it up again on stir (speed 1) it repeats itself slow first then speeds up then cuts out.

You need a new speed control board, easy fix about $35.00 for the part and an hour of your time, not even messy to do a total of six screws and four wire connections that clip on, several youtube step by step instruction videos available. parts available on ebay. let us know if this helps you

I would recommend that you first check the Hall effect sensor which determines the speed.  I had this exact problem and I actually went out and bought another Hall sensor for about $13.  I replaced the original sensor and made sure that the connection between the sensor and control board was nice and snug. My blender worked as good as new! But I was curious to know if my original sensor was defective so I put it back in mixer and again made sure all of the connections were tight.  Guess what?  My original sensor also made my mixer work!  There was nothing wrong with my original Hall effect sensor except the connection between the control board and sensor was not adequate--unfortunately I didn't check the connections before I decided to buy another one. My guess is that the connection between the control board and the sensor probably loosens or comes undone over time from use and vibrations. 
1.  Download the mixer parts and diagrams from the Kitchenaid website to see what the Hall effect sensor looks like. 2.  You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to open up the mixer. 3.  Make sure that the connection between the control board and sensor is absolutely tight and snug. 4.  Also, make sure that the orientation of the sensor connection between the control board and sensor is correct. it's hard to know which way the sensor should be connected because the control board has three prongs and the sensor can attach facing up or facing down. If, after you've made the connections, the mixer still doesn't work.  Disconnect the sensor and reconnect it with the prongs facing the opposite direction and try it.  I actually found the right orientation through trial and error.  By going through this trial and error, I also had my Eureka moment when I realized that the original sensor probably would also work if it were reconnected with correct orientation.   5.  This whole process probably takes less than 10-15 minutes to perform.  6.  Make sure you use common sense and unplug the mixer when making connections and such.

It shouldn't do that, and I really doubt there's anything you can do about it other than to have the defective part replaced. It sounds to me as though there's a problem with the control mechanism. If the machine is still under warranty, contact Kitchenaid to see about getting it repaired or replaced. If not, get the name of a local shop that repairs Kitchenaid mixers -- from your description of the problem, the mixer is nearly unless in its current state.

Hi REDLACQUER. Sorry to hear about the metal shavings. This is probably not to best way to take iron in your diet... My first thought would be to ask if your mixer is still under warranty. If you’ve had the machine less than one year, then I’d let KA replace your mixer with a new one. However, I suspect like many who seek assistance from FIXYA.com, your mixer is out of warranty, so what can you do?
Have you been able to find exactly where the metal shavings are originating? From the symptoms you describe, it appears that the planetary/agitator shaft assembly may be rubbing against its housing and generating the metal shavings at higher speeds. Have you noticed any increased noise levels/squeaking/screeching when the planetary rotates? It’s also possible that the planetary is out of alignment and not rotating true. Could the agitator shaft been jarred or hit hard during set up or moving in or out of you storage cabinet? Or the shavings could be symptomatic of other internal gear problems, but that would be the least likely scenario as the mixers internal gears are pretty much self-contained.
The good news is that this can be troubleshot and fixed quite easily (OK, maybe with a little effort) by yourself if you are a DITY type person, and feel adventurous. However, before you start to disassemble your mixer, be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case, KP2671, and select the last file, KP2671XWH3.pdf (325.07 KB) listed under Parts List (24) (check to verify that it matches your mixer model).
Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled “Case, Gearing and Planetary Unit”, which provides and exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. I suspect your Planetary Assembly, Illus No. 15, is rubbing somewhere against its housing, Lower Gearcase, Illus. No. 24.
To gain access to these pieces you’ll need the following tools: a regular or Phillips screw driver, retaining clip pliers, and a small drift pin punch and a small hammer. You need to remove the Transmission Housing (Illus No. 7) and remove all the lubricating grease from the transmission housing and gears (when removing the grease be on the lookout for shavings in the grease which would indicate excessive gear wear). This will allow you to remove Illus No. 25, 21, 18 & 19, Retaining Clip, Bevel Gear, Retaining Pin and Worm Gear Follower, respectively.
Once you remove the Retaining Pin (Illus. No. 18) the Planetary Assembly can be tapped down through the Lower Gearcase Assembly (Illus. No 24). With the Planetary removed, you can inspect it and the inside of the Lower Gearcase to determine where the shavings originated. Be sure to look closely at the Planetary Gear in the lower gearcase as well as the Agitator Shaft Pinion Gear (Illus. No. 12). That will also identify what parts need to be replaced, which you can order online.
You’ll need to replace the grease you removed with new grease. You should use a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Do not try to reuse any original grease as it may have ‘debris’ in it.
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer. The mixers displayed in the links are different KA models, but the principles are the same.

Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer.

That is indicative of worn motors brushes or a speed regulation circuit board problem. It is worth getting it fixed.

The starting position for those top speed control plate screws with the lock nuts it 8 full turns in when you fit the plate. Correct adjustment begins in or out from that point. The bottom screw should have been left where it was to start with as that is for adjusting the start position so that when the lever closes the switch contacts to start the mixer the plate only starts moving when the lever moves to the second click. Try and get the bottom one roughly right and then work on the top ones. Turn it to the first click on the speed lever and then EVENLY adjust the 2 top screws to have the planetary turn 13 to 15 times per 15 seconds. Lock up the lock nuts and then check that the bottom screw is in the correct position with speed increasing a small amount as the lever slips into the second click.

How to replace the speed control plate


Take the back cover off, remove the wires. Unclip the spring from the bottom of the plate, don't let it fly back inside the housing. Unlock the 2 screws at the top and undo them. Fit the new plate, each screw 8 turns in to start with. Hook up the spring, put on the wires where they came from. Start machine on speed one, and adjust the top screws evenly to give the planetary 13 to 15 revolutions in 15 seconds. Lock the screws up with the lock nuts. The screw at the bottom is then adjusted so that it gives a slight speed increase when you enter speed 2 from speed 1.

You need to adjust the mixer speeds. Obtain a copy of the KSM150 Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com. Remove the screw holding the End Cover and locate the three screws from the Control Plate. All three (2 top left and right, and 1 bottom) must all be adjusted. 1. Loosen the lock nuts enough & Turn the 2 top screws clockwise until they cannot be turned
anymore. Leave the bottom screw alone for now.
2. Use a dab of white paint or paper whiteout to mark the positions of the Phillips screws.
3. Plug in your mixer and Set the speed selector to "Stir".
4. Turn each top screw One full turn couterclockwise (alternating between Left and Right)
Keep making one full turn at the time (for both left and right) until the motor starts running.
5. Put your hand near the Agitator shaft and allow it to brush your finger slightly. Use your
watch or clock and start counting the number of times the shaft touches your finger in
60 seconds. The correct count should be 60 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). If it is less
or more than 60, give each screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise or clockwise and start counting
again. Now tighten both lock nuts.
6. Set the speed selector to "6" and turn the bottom screw either clockwise or counterclockwise
to achieve a speed of 180 RPM.

For your reference, the planetary RPM's for the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer are as follows:
Stir speed - 60
Speed 2 - 95
Speed 4 - 135
Speed 6 - 180
Speed 8 - 225
Speed 10 - 280

I need instructions to use my new kitchen aid attachment


Hi. Basically all you really need to know is to start the machine at a slow speed, begin shredding, increase speed to a point where the machine is not labouring. Next time you use that attachment, set it for that speed. Different attachments and the foods they process load different stresses on the mixer. Always use a speed that is one step above/below the labouring sounds. Kitchenaid doesn't see fit to publish these instructions online as they do their other manuals. Another missed opportunity by Kitchenaid. You might want to check out the kitchenaid forum. one of these people just might have it in digital form. Good luck! ricardok45
