Amana side-by-side fridge freezer only cold at the bottom

11 year old fridge working fine until yesterday. Ice melted in ice maker then noticed top of both fridge and freezer not cold. Water from melted ice re-froze in bottom of freezer, so working there. Bottom of fridge also still cool. Cleaned front of condensor coils and noticed no heat coming from them. Fridge making noise as if working to a degree, but no cold being distributed.

Yes it does seem to be running all the time. The evaporative cooling fan in the freezer is not running. There is no frost on the freezer wall. We pulled off the panel in front of the fan and coils and there is some frost (but not ice) on the coils in there. Not sure if the condenser fan is running but there is noise coming from under the fridge.

  • seafish5 Jan 30, 2009

The condenser fan is running, just checked. Should the evaporative cooling fan be running all the time? What would cause it not to run?

  • seafish5 Jan 30, 2009

Thanks for the tip. We've checked the connections and all seem good. We are on an island in Australia and can't get people to come here to do service work hence our dilemma. Have talked to one refrigeration guy on the phone and he said it was probably something to do with the heater, which he said is linked somehow to the operation of the fan. What do you think?

  • seafish5 Feb 03, 2009

Solved this and fixed it ourselves. Thanks for your comments. It was actually the evaporative fan motor, which we replaced and now working great!

Yes the evap fan in the frezer should be running when the compressor is running[it may not for a minute or so as it starts up.Amana's are good for the connectors at the evap fan motor comming apart.the connectors are white and will look like its together but when you pull it will come apart.i would always cut the connector out and use a wire nut so wont happen again.if any other questions please email thru FixYa and i will be glad to help. God bless ,tom

Fridge portion doesn't get cold

The defrost circuit is not working, there are usually 3 things that normally go bad, defrost timer, defrost heater, and thermal switch. Would have serviceman check it out as cooling fins on coils will cut you like a razor.

No air blowing into fridge, although we can hear blower. Freezer is working

if you can hear the fan still blowing but no cold air coming up to fridge section a common problem with bottom mount freezers is the door gets left open and the air ducts freeze up and the air can't blow up to the top.turn the control off in the freezer.remove the top shelf and the door, check to see if there are any screws one on each side of the slide arms,if there are remove them and lift the door up and out, with a hair dryer melt out the ice by blowing the hot air up each side of the back wall, also if the back inside wall of the freezer is covered with ice or like snow then you have a defrost problem but if there's no ice on back wall do what i said and blow the air up the sides of the back wall through the vents until no more water is seen dripping through the vent holes, then turn the freezer back on and check to see if you feel cold air blowing in through the vents in the fridge section,if you feel cold air then you're all set,if not keep blowing the hot air up the sides until it's melted out.let me know what you find, you'll know if the door was left open, ice will be on the ceiling near the light switch and sometimes on the top of the freezer door

The electricity went off yesterday while we were gone (not sure how long) and the freezer is no longer staying cold. The ice maker hasn't made any ice and it has melted on top of the other food. We have a...

Your inlet tube that goes to the icemaker may be frozen. To Check: Shut off water supply to Fridge, disconnect the water line that goes to the icemaker at top back. Use a flexible item to insert in the water line connection. I used a zip tie. If the flexible item won't all the through to the ice maker, the line is frozen. Thaw out the tube from inside the freezer with a hair dryer. Re-connect everything, you now have ice . . . Solution #2: You may have to replace your "Water Inlet Valve" located at bottom right rear of Fridge. Easy to do, just follow the color codes, be sure and shut off the water.

Freezer will not keep foods frozen fridge will not keeep temp.

Sounds like a main control board problem keeping the freezer fan from working . If no air flow to the top of the freezer , the icemaker will stop working and the ice will begin to melt ( leaking from freezer ) . The coils will start to freeze up due to no air flow across them . If continued for a period of time , the cold air could return thru the return vent located in the bottom of the ref/freezer section and freeze the water tank in the refrig section , causing the no water thru dispensor .

Fridge and freezer not getting cold

  • You have 2 fans Make sure your top fan is working ,its located inside the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked. With out a fan you have no circulation .Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open 12 to 24 hrs this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.

Fridge is not cold enough, freezer is working fine, but has frost

Just had the same problem with my side-by-side.

In my case, the solution was to empty the freezer side, to access a back panel INSIDE the freezer covering the fan and cooling coils. Two screws held the back panel cover on, and when I removed the panel cover I found the cooling coils to be totally iced up, preventing the flow of cold air into the fridge side. I left the freezer open for a few hours until all the ice was melted, before replacing the inside panel. (I used a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting).

Everything's working fine now for me - good luck with yours!

11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

Bottom of freezer/fridge only getting cold.

Thre is a fan inside the freezer which circulates the cold air around both the fridge and the freezer compartments.
You should be able to feel cold air blowing around the inside, particularly at the top of the freezer.
If the defrost thermostat fails open, the internal fan (depending on freezer) will stop and this can be the cause of the freezer being warm at the top and no ice.
You say the bottom of the freezer is blowing cold, but are you sure its blowing, as it can feel like a cold blow. Of course the fan could have failed or may be the defrost heater itself.

Fan is Running

Your refrigerator isn't defrosting. When you melted the ice on the coils in the freezer you might have noticed a glass tube with a wire going into each end this is your defrost element that is probably bad. If it tests out good then your problem is either in the defrost thermostat, or the motherboard that tells your fridge when to defrost.
