Runa an earth magnet over the wall. It will find nails and screws that hold the drywall to the studs. An old way to find studs.

You always have a stud on one side of an outlet. Take off the cover and see which side of the outlet the stud is. Now all you have to do is measure 16'' center from that stud to find the next one.

The stud finders are not expensive but you can sometimes use a magnet to find the nails. Also you might try shining a flashlight across the wall. The putty put over the nails will sometimes show up. Last resort is to tap on the wall and try and hear the areas that have support under them.

When you are drywalling , how do you mark the location of the electric socket ont he drywall yor about to hang in place.

You can either measure up from the floor or the piece of drywall you just hang and then measure over from the wall or the piece of drywall you just hang or you can put the drywall in place and I ball behind it and Mark with a pencil and then cut it out with a dremel tool and you should be good from there. You might want to use a keyhole saw or a roto zip and a Rotozip is the best way to do it but it takes a little practice in order to control it

Drying out wet drywall

I'm assuming your talking about drywall that was wet during a flood of some type? Recommend you remove all damaged drywall and using a straight edge and a utility knife this can be easily accomplished. After you cut and remove the damage, remove all screws or nails from the studs giving a good surface for the new drywall that your going to replace the damaged stuff with. Get that done and we can move onto taping and drywall compound repairs. Hope this helps.

My middle handrail attaching brackets were attached to the drywall with plastic anchors - and they are now loose

Handrail brackets should never be installed into drywall--they must be mounted into the studs behind the drywall so that they will support the weight of the person using the rail. Hope this helps!

Trying to mount blinds in kitchen, walls plaster over carstone. as soon as we hit carstone masonry drill stopped in its tracks!! less than half inch into wall!! really need to be at least quarter inch...

Is there a space between the back of the drywall and the stone? Or is the drywall tight to the stone? Either way, you need a masonry bit, I hope you have one, a hammer drill would be real nice, but you can muscle through it without one. You can try a smaller bit as your first cut , then go to the next size. Makes it a lot easier to drill. If there was a space behind the drywall, they make all kinds of fasteners for drywall only, they will hold quite a bit, but might not be enough for blinds that are going to be yanked on.

Drywall screws don't go all the way in the first time.

You use the lower speed setting (which has more torque) and the clutch ring, which is just behind the chuck) should be set to a higher value, i.e. 16, 18, 20 or whatever the largest number is on the drill clutch ring.

If you still cannot drive them all the way in, it might be because you are drilling into hardwood studs or supports behind the drywall. If this is the case, you may have to pre-drill (pilot hole) for each screw so the screws are easier to drive in.

Can oly get to one 2x4

If you have drywall, you can use heavy duty drywall anchors. If not, you will have to extend the straps and attach at the same point. If you don't have drywall, you can add another post anywhere if your plate is accessable.
