My Kenmore Model 51564103 refrigerator is 5 years old. It stopped cooling in freezer and refrigerator today. There is a clicking sound coming from the bottom front of the freezer section, near the floor. The coils are clean.
Possibly a defrost circuit problem -
1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.
Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.
If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.
Oops. my bad (I thought unit was cooling, and not freezing.).
The clicking is the compressor trying to start.
Compressors have 5 year warranties (does not cover labor or consumables.). Call Sears, get them to come out. Or it's time to buy a new refrigerator.
Could also be the start relay, but I doubt it. Even if the tech can get the compressor started, I wouldn't trust it.
Thanks for rating me. By any chance, could you bump me up to a FixYa. I mean, this isn't one that I could fix due to the type of failure, but I did give you clear direction on how to get the actual work done.
Hate to beg, but I'm trying to get my rating up, and every little bit helps!
Again, thanks, and keep me posted on how this one works out.

Didn't notice ice, but did use the hair dryer. No water came out. No change. Can still hear the clicking--sounds like a motor (?) is trying to turn on, but can't. Any other suggestions?
Thanks so much!
You absolutely did help me greatly. And so quickly! I really appreciate your suggestions. Keep on doin' it!
