Go into the app store on your iPad, and search for Ereader. Then download. If it isn't available for iPad 1 gen, then you can't get it. You would have to jailbreak your iPad, and that is not advisable.
Tricky repair, several ribbon cables to be aware of as they are easy to damage when removing old digitizer. It is best to take to a cell phone repair shop for the repair. If you are confident you can handle the repair yourself, there are several great videos on YouTube to get you pointed in the right direction. If you put in iPad 2 screen replacement in the YouTube search window it should pull them up for you. Good luck!!!
Sorry, but I think you need to take it to an authorised Apple repair shop (or Apple Store) to change the screen... If it still works, you could try and fill some clear glue or silicon in the cracks as a temporary measure, but it sounds like cutting yourself is easy...
Go buy a new tablet. The screen will probably run probably $50-75.
Are you going to attempt to replace the screen yourself? Do you have the necessary tools? If not, how much will the tools cost on top of what you would pay for the screen. Taking it out to be repaired? You'll be hard pressed to find a technician that charges less than $75 for labor alone.
The glass is a moderate difficulty repair. You would need a plastic pry bar, a hair dryer or heat gun to get the glue off and the glass for the iPad 3 runs about $100
