When I turn on the computer, I usually have to force power off the computer and turn it on again over and over until it finally turns on. Then, once it does turn on, it works fine other that the times the display backlight often turns off. I know its the backlight because I can still see the image on the LCD. I don't know what is wrong, but I have heard this is a common problem with this model of computer. What is the problem, and what can I do to fix it?
SOURCE: CMOS Battery
you want to be looking for the rtc(real time clock) which is a little unit not much bigger than ur thumb nail.next to it youll find the battery(sometimes heat sealed with plastic.)if you remove this battery for about 5 mins then replace it or in ur case maybe renew it this will reset bios to factory(also method for bypass passwords as every thing is reset)
you might also wanna check ur video card.(connections and dust)

Possible hard disk failure or hard disk controller failure.
if you feel confident remove the hard disk and replace - obviosuly make sure that there is not power running and remove the battery - replace hard disk then battery then power and try again.
Do you get any beeps? is the hard disk clicking? listen carefully to it and post your findings.

Take the battery and power supply out and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This will reset your hardware settings. Your backup battery isnt your problem. Does your battery light turn on when charging? Does your keyboard lights light up when it runs for a second (try pressing caps lock)?
SOURCE: display flickers on boot. then goes black
Before making any decision on whether it's a hardware failure, please try and boot from a CD or DVD (recovery disc). If it does successfully boot from an external disc - and there is no flickering problem, then the hardware parts are okay. In that case, please go to this link: http://lifehacker.com/5413223/how-to-fix-your-relatives-terrible-computer?skyline=true&s=x for more information on what to do when you can't enter into your operating system and how to fix malwares that might be causing the flickering. If you find my ideas satisfactory, please do rate me. Thanks
Testimonial: "same problem when CD boot. How can I decide whether it's the LCD screen or some internal circuitry?"
SOURCE: I have sony vaio vgn nr310E pc notebook. I just
i cant find the model listed - is this the model VGN NR310
Theres a number of methods to get into the recovery manager on Sony - could not find any specific info on your model - I would try the following F8 or F10 (Alt + F10 ) should bring up the recovery manager as the PC boots -
Do you have Sony Vaio Recovery Centre on the PC ?
You can create recovery DVDs from this program
The support site for that model is here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=VGNNR310E
