Need to replace bearings and seals on the gearbox shaft which drives the hopper auger. Have opened the cast gearbox and removed the hopper but can't figure out how to pull the shaft (with large drive gear) out of the hopper side of the gearbox casing.

yes the cast can be welded(brazed). if you are able to weld this yourself, just remember before you can weld it, you have to heat it till it is cherry red then you can weld the piece. if your not qualified to weld it you can usually find a portable welding company to do this for you. hope this helps you please rate the solution...thanks

I'll answer this question myself since we figured out the problem later in the day. The shaft consists of two parts (which we knew), and they should just pull apart easily. What we didn't know was that the clutch mechanism which connects the two shafts was frozen and wouldn't release even with the use of a gear puller (broke the cast iron drive gear figuring that out...oops). Once you have the gear housing open the large cast gear and shaft assembly should pull straight back, and then you can access the snap ring on the remaining shaft section which can then be removed through the hopper. We eventually figured out that we could loosen the clutch by locking the gear to the housing with a c-clamp, and then using a box end wrench with a pipe over the handle for leverage, on the auger drive end to turn the shaft until it loosened enough to pull. The clutch is supposed to let the drive shaft turn freely in one direction...ours was locked in place. Once the large the large gear was pulled off, the rest was easy.
